Credit check company breached, 5.6 million customers' info exposed

The massive credit check company 700Credit has suffered a breach, potentially exposing the sensitive financial information of millions of people.

Some 5.6 million people have had their info stolen. The accessed information varies, but includes "name, address, Social Security number, and date of birth," according to a notice from 700Credit. The company is a credit check giant that provides services to lots of car dealerships.

According to the attorney general's office in Michigan — where 700Credit is based — on Oct. 25, "a breach was discovered that compromised personal data collected from dealers between May 2025 and October 2025."

"If you get a letter from 700Credit, don’t ignore it," said Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel in a statement. "It is important that anyone affected by this data breach takes steps as soon as possible to protect their information."

The company noted that the breach reportedly originated from an integration partner in July, but that the partner did not immediately alert 700Credit. An exposed API then apparently stole customer data.

Affected customers are being alerted now and will be offered free credit-monitoring services.
