World of Warcraft Midnight adds a new housing feature that takes the guesswork out of building your dream pad
World of Warcraft housing is finally a reality - well, it is for those that have pre-ordered the Midnight expansion, at least. It's taken players no time at all to build everything from cozy cottages, to Viking longhouses and ghostly ships that sail through the skies (thank you, floating house glitch). But for those wanting to maximize the space on their plot, there's been a really frustrating oversight - there's no visual indication of where the edge of your buildable land is. Well, that's about to change.
The new housing system is already making one of the best MMOs even better, with World of Warcraft players already flexing their creative muscles. However, if you want to build larger houses on the boundary of your plot to increase your outdoor space, or place exterior items in your 'garden,' then knowing where the edge of your plot is requires some guesswork. You'll only really know if you've gone outside the lines when placing an object fails and a message pops up. As you'd expect, if you're designing an elaborate outdoor space, this can get pretty irritating.

Seeing the feedback, Blizzard has swiftly cooked up a solution. As spotted by Wowhead, while you're in Edit Mode, a faint yellow border will appear that signals the boundary of your property. It's just been added to the Midnight beta, and should arrive on live servers within the next few weeks.
Interestingly, Wowhead has found that, right now, the edge portrayed by the yellow line isn't a hard border - items can clip outside of it if part of them is still within the line, while smaller items can "even be placed about one square grid outside of the limit before the indicator turns red." It's unclear whether this is a bug that'll be addressed while it's in beta, or whether (like those floating houses) Blizzard will just keep this in to give fans a bit of leeway.

Interestingly, I can't see this being mentioned in the new set of beta test development notes that Blizzard posted last night. However, what I can see (aside from a bunch of class balancing changes) is the following housing-specific change: "Larger house sizes are now available in the 'Edit House Exterior' options."
Several other UI and accessibility changes have been listed as well, including a new feature called "Combat Audio Alerts," which will provide an audio cue whenever you're being targeted by an enemy. I definitely can't see that being abused…
A reminder, if you're not already creating your own home in WoW, you can get early access to the new housing system by pre-ordering any edition of the Midnight expansion. If you want to wait until everything's 100% ready, then you'll have to hold out until its full release date on Monday, March 2, 2026.
