Have you put up your Christmas tree yet? And no, we’re not talking about the one that goes in your living room. Social media’s latest holiday food trend features adorable fruit arrangements made to look like miniature trees. Unlike your average Christmas tree, strawberry trees won't last long enough to be taken out to the curb; your guests will devour yours as soon as it’s served.

As impressive as these trees may look, they’re actually straightforward to make—no Christmas tree farm required. Turn them into the centerpiece of your holiday charcuterie board or use them as edible decor for your Christmas table.

How to Build Your Own Strawberry Tree

To make a strawberry tree, start with a medium-sized foam cone. Before you start arranging your strawberries, wrap the cone in plastic wrap to make it food-safe. Make sure every part of the foam cone is completely covered in plastic film; use multiple layers to prevent tearing.

Once the base is ready to go, start building your tree. Fortunately, it's easier to assemble than your typical artificial Christmas tree—you’ll be done in just a few minutes.

Start with at least one carton of strawberries; you’ll need enough to cover your foam cone completely. Medium- to large-sized berries are best; the closer in size they are, the better. Skewer the tops of your strawberries with a toothpick. It’s up to you whether you prefer to have the leaves of your berries on or off; leaving the green tops will cover any gaps in your tree, but taking them off makes your berries easier to eat.

Regardless of which option you choose, be sure to leave about half of the toothpick sticking out the top of each strawberry. You’ll use this half of the pick to secure each strawberry to your foam base. Starting from the bottom and working around it, gently attach one strawberry at a time, placing them as close together as possible. Save your smallest berries for the top row of your foam cone, in case you don’t have much space to fill.

Once you’ve covered the cone in strawberries (don’t forget to stick your final strawberry on the very top), it’s time to start filling in the gaps. If you left the tops on your strawberries, you may decide to leave your tree as-is. But chances are, you’ve got at least a few patches of plastic film peeking through.

Mint leaves are one easy option to fill in gaps; take a sprig and stick it between holes in your strawberry tree. This will give your tree gorgeous foliage that makes it look more like the real deal. You can also use smaller berries (like raspberries, blueberries, or cranberries) or sprigs of edible pine or rosemary. The gaps can even be brushed with a little cooled, melted chocolate or fruit jam

Before you serve your beautiful strawberry tree, there’s one last step you can take. Dusting powdered sugar over your entire strawberry tree will make it look especially wintry; use a sifter to prevent any lumps. If you choose to dust your tree, make sure you do so right before serving it; as the powdered sugar picks up moisture from your strawberries, it will turn into more of a sugar glaze than a powdery dusting of snow.
