Ornament clusters are the way to go when decorating your tree this year—once you try them, you won’t be able to go back to hanging ornaments one by one. Not only are they visually striking, but you likely already have everything you need to start decorating. Give your Christmas tree a fresh look in less time with this simple trick.

How to Build Ornament Clusters for Your Tree

All you’ll need to make your ornament clusters are some pipe cleaners or wire. First, pick out a selection of Christmas ornaments you want to cluster together (usually around three to five, depending on size). Next, weave the wire through the tops of each bauble to string them together. Finally, loop tightly so that the baubles are pulled towards each other, creating a cluster instead of a line.

Once you've prepared the clusters, hang them on the tree using an ornament hook or by simply looping your wire around a branch. Nestle your ornament clusters into your tree so that they look like they’re blooming out of it rather than just hanging off.

Don’t be shy about experimenting with the texture of your baubles, too. Try including one glittery bauble to help each cluster stand out, or mix matte and glossy baubles to give your cluster a more dimensional look. Varying the size of each bauble in the cluster can be a fun way to add variety to your Christmas tree, especially if you want your bauble clusters to look more like winter blooms or berries.

Not every ornament on your tree needs to be in a cluster, but they are a simple way to fill in those awkward gaps where your Christmas tree is just too thick to properly hang ornaments off each branch. Adjust how many ornaments you fit in each cluster based on the size of the space you want to fill.

Another trick you can try with ornament clusters is sliding faux berry branches on top of your tree branches. These types of ornaments look like teeny tiny clusters scattered across your Christmas tree, adding even more variety to the sizes of clusters that you have on your tree (and tying in that berry-inspired look).

The best part about creating ornament clusters is that you can remove the wire at the end of the year if you wish, so that you can create all new ornament clusters the following year if you want to switch up your Christmas tree theme
