Fortnite OG Season 7 is bringing back a weapon so infamously overpowered it was vaulted after just three days
Fortnite Chapter 7 recently got underway, but for old hats like me, it's the OG offering that I'm always keeping an eye out for. Those revivals of Chapter 1 content get me feeling all nostalgic, reminding me of the time where Fortnite truly dominated my life. Currently unplayable in the game since the start of the new chapter, it'll return later this week with Fortnite OG Chapter 1 Season 7. This season delivered the first snowy biome to the island back in the day, and that's a suitable thing to celebrate given the time of year. However, it's also going to see the return of one of the most infamous, overpowered weapons to ever grace the battle royale game. It's official: the Infinity Blade is coming back.
Of course, with this being a reimagining of a past season, we already had a fairly good idea of what to expect. However, Epic has today confirmed some of the content that's returning when Fortnite OG Season 7 lands. The map will transform as it did way back 2018 - a huge iceberg turns the south-west corner of the map frosty, introducing Polar Peak, Happy Hamlet, and Frosty Flights as snow-covered POIs. The X-4 Stormwing fighter plane returns too, letting you take to the skies once more.

However, the reintroduction of the Infinity Blade has made my eyes bulge out of my head today. For those not familiar with it, this weapon is one of the most controversial in Fortnite's history. The first true Mythic item, you could pull it from the ground like King Arthur's Excalibur, but drop all of your other items in exchange. This sword dealt devastating damage with its swing and lunge attacks, cutting down players and their builds with ease. It would also boost you to 200 health and shields, with 50 HP granted back to you after eliminating someone, and give you a movement speed boost.
Its strength was particularly problematic because it caused chaos in the game's competitive scene. At the time it was in the game, Fortnite's Winter Royale solos tournament was underway, which had a total prize pool of $1 million up for grabs. However, the dominance one player could achieve by wielding the Infinity Blade meant that all semblance of balance was thrown out the window.
An infamous clip of pro player Harrison 'psalm' Chang using the sword to devastating effect was widely circulated, and pretty much proved a weapon this strong had no real place in a competitive environment. You can check out the clip in question below.
As a result of its overperformance in the pro scene, and due to grumblings from more casual players too, the Infinity Blade was vaulted from the core battle royale mode after just three days, never to return.
However, it's going to make a comeback in OG Season 7. While it won't be available straight away, Epic says that it will appear "later in the season" - I wonder if that's just so players aren't immediately annoyed by it straight away, or if a three-day homage to its brief, controversial life is planned at some point.
Elsewhere in OG Season 7, the loot pool will once again be switched up to reflect the old arsenal. Expect to find the suppressed sniper rifle, scoped revolver and AR, dual pistols, stink bombs, balloons, and the boom box scattered around the island. As always, expect a new OG battle pass packed with old favorites to arrive as well.
Fortnite OG Chapter 1 Season 7 gets underway on Thursday, December 11, but as mentioned, the Infinity Blade won't be available straight away. We'll keep an eye out for when the infamous sword makes its return.
