If you're an avid Skyrim blacksmith, highly anticipated sword-making game Bladesong finally has a launch date

Sometimes I find myself contemplating what my life would have looked like in another era. The glitz and glamor of the 1920s, the innovative years of the Enlightenment; as a historian by trade, it's something I ponder far too frequently (but I'm a modern historian, so no dreaming of the Roman Empire). Having recently replayed Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption, however, I've found myself falling down a medieval hole, contemplating what the world would have looked like as your average, working citizen. Enter Bladesong, a simulation game that tasks you with creating unique, fantastical swords that look absolutely beautiful. Man, life could have been so different.

In Bladesong, you are the swordsmith of Eren Keep, the last bastion of supposed sanity in a corrupted world. It's your job to supply this once-proud nation with their weapons, even if their demands prove somewhat odd and, in many cases, rather intricate. With a vast array of molds from all across the globe, you can craft perfect representations of real-life weaponry, or the wildest swords from your most obscure fantasies - the choice is entirely up to you.

As you cement yourself as the realm's premier blacksmith, you'll receive more and more commissions from nobles, mercenaries, and everyone in between. You'll venture through the streets of Eren Keep to secure new work, then craft your blades using the game's modular build system, all while unraveling conspiracies and exposing political machinations.

You can choose from a vast array of materials - leather, obsidian, ivory, just to name a few - and even etch magical runes into the blades themselves. While you'll have to stick to the customer's request in Story Mode, in Creative Mode, you have complete freedom.

You'll also be able to share your creations with other players, and if you're feeling spicy (and also have a lot of disposable income from your IRL blacksmithing career) you can export your swords and 3D print them. That, right there, is pretty damn cool, but please wield them responsibly.

As someone who has spent far too much time hammering away at the forge in the likes of Skyrim and, laterally, Blades of Fire, Bladesong sounds like the perfect way to while away the hours. Some people go for the relaxing vibes of Powerwash Sim, but the idea of creating truly unique, beautifully animated creations is what gives me that much-needed dopamine hit. Plus, I'm from Scotland, and it's winter - God knows I need a warm forge.
