Fallout creator Tim Cain is back working full-time at Obsidian, but "don't bother guessing" what his new game is

Fallout creator and former The Outer Worlds co-director Tim Cain has announced his return to a full-time role at Obsidian Entertainment. Cain, who was the driving force behind the post-apocalyptic RPG during his time at Interplay Entertainment in the '90s, previously joined Obsidian back in 2011, just a year after it had launched Fallout New Vegas. He then stayed there through games such as Pillars of Eternity and The Outer Worlds, before stepping down to take on a part-time contractor role from June 2020. Now, however, he's back.

"Hi everyone, it's me, Tim," the father of Fallout says in the new video, seen below. "Decided to do a Cain on Games update because, as you can see, things have changed. Lots of changes, actually." He explains that he's moved back to Southern California to return to work for Obsidian. "I'm a full-time employee and in person, so not remote. I'm not a contractor any more."

While Cain did help out on The Outer Worlds 2 during his self-claimed "semi-retirement," this was in a non-exclusive role alongside work for several other companies. He says this move means he's no longer "working in other places," although he says there's "at least one game that I worked on that I know is going to ship" outside of Obsidian. "I also can't talk about the project I'm working on at Obsidian, just because, you know, that's covered under NDA."

Naturally, speculation is immediately rife, although Cain cautions, "Don't bother guessing, you're not going to guess right." Obviously it'd be easy to dream about the potential of Fallout New Vegas 2, especially with the Amazon Prime show tying into the original. But it sounds like his current goal is something a little more unexpected. "I would say that I'm probably a lot less retired now than I was before."

If you've enjoyed watching his 'Cain on Games' YouTube channel, don't worry. "This channel is going to keep going," he reassures. "No-one in Obsidian has even remotely suggested that I have to stop it. In fact, many of my co-workers have said that they watch this channel." He says the series will continue "as long as I have stories to tell, as long as you have questions that are really good and that I think I need a video to answer."

Cain actually remarks that his decision to start creating on YouTube began "because I wrote a really thick memoir and everybody who read it said it was boring." He adds that his return to in-person work means "we've already started having chocolate-eating meetings again," and that you can anticipate some tasty details from these on his chocolate blog. "I thought that Dubai chocolate was a trend, [but I] finally got a bar. It is delicious."
