We've been waiting for Ubisoft's Prince of Persia Sands of Time remake for four years, and now it might be round the corner
The Prince of Persia The Sands of Time Remake has had a troubled existence. After being first announced back in 2020 with a speculative January 2021 release date, it has since been moved from Ubisoft Mumbai to Ubisoft Montreal and been stuck in development hell for the past four years. However, industry insider Tom Henderson suggests that the game will finally be releasing next month, four years after its intended launch window.
The original game was hailed as one of the best action games of its day, and while the genre has since fallen out of favor in lieu of soulslikes, roguelikes, and gargantuan RPGs, there's still an air of excitement when the big franchises release new instalments of their classic games.
The Prince of Persia Sands of Time remake was no different, whipping fans of both the series and genre into a fervor back in 2020. Excitement tailed off as the game struggled through an extended development period, but I'm starting to feel good things all over again as insiders pinpoint a January release.
Henderson mentioned the remake on the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast, saying that Ubisoft is aiming for a January 16, 2026 launch. He also says that this "makes perfect sense for The Game Awards," although doesn't confirm the game will be shown on Geoff Keighley's show.

Whether the Prince of Persia Sands of Time remake is teased at The Game Awards, advertised elsewhere, or simply shadowdropped in January with little fanfare, I'm intrigued to finally get my hands on the game. While some games like Dragon Age The Veilguard and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 clearly show the signs of their troubled development cycles, it's possible to walk through hell and come out unscathed. Let's hope that the eponymous Prince arrives unharmed.
