This year has been full of excellent games, but when it comes to the best action games, Dynasty Warriors: Origins isn't talked about enough. Even if you're not a fan of the typical musou games, Dynasty Warriors: Origins is a great jumping-in point for anyone remotely interested in the long-running franchise. Even though you don't really get to play as other characters, unlike previous entries, there's still plenty of variety. There's a broad selection of different weapon types, from the agile Crescent Blades to the powerful Halberds, and as you go through the game, you're able to upgrade by buying new, improved gear from merchants. It lets you carve out your own preferred approach to battle.

Like the rest of the series, Dynasty Warriors: Origins is best when you're taking in the action. Each level sees you demolish seemingly endless hordes of nameless enemies, while the occasional generals and leaders pop into battle to try and fight you. Origins delicately toes the line between a true-blooded musou game and an action RPG, with the more intensive boss fights giving you the ability to dodge and use abilities to win.

It's a fantastic game, one that Paul Kelly called "an essential ARPG for fresh-faced players and grizzled veterans alike" in our Dynasty Warriors: Origins review. It lays a solid foundation for what modern Dynasty Warrior games should be in the future, and while I would've preferred a customizable main character or one with a little more depth to them, the narrative is merely a vehicle for the engaging gameplay.
