The Rust June update brings jungle changes and big combat rebalancing

The Rust June update has arrived, and there's a lot of changes in store for Steam's biggest survival game. While there's nothing so dramatic as last month's introduction of a whole new biome, developer Facepunch isn't resting on its laurels. Indeed, jungle changes are at the top of a long list of alterations, buffs, nerfs, and other balance tweaks. Among the other inclusions are the long-rumored silencer rework, a crucial lighting adjustment, some very helpful wire laying and cosmetic base-building additions, and a fantastic tool for creative mode players, so let's dig through the details.

"One of the loudest bits of feedback we heard after last month's jungle update: 'I can't find anything.' Fair," Facepunch writes at the top of the latest set of Rust patch notes. The new biome, it seems, was "a bit too good at being a jungle," making it difficult for players to find all of the key resources needed to progress in the survival game. Wild hemp has been made taller, with purple flowers to increase visibility; you'll find more rock formations with ore nodes on them; berry bushes now have a dedicated jungle population; cars and bikes will spawn alongside jungle roads; and you can no longer spawn in the jungle biome unless you choose to put your house there.

Monument distribution has also been increased across the board. "This has been a long-standing issue," Facepunch remarks, "and it worsened with last month's jungle update." You'll now find the likes of airfields, train yards, and excavators far more frequently around the whole map.

Major combat changes have arrived. The teased silencer adjustments are now here, with the existing silencer now non-craftable. In its place, you can make 'soda can' or 'oil filter' options, but these only last for around 12 and 48 rounds on a standard assault rifle respectively, meaning you'll need to be a lot more selective with your shots. The new variants also decrease both damage and velocity, although the high-end option (now called the Military Silencer) will not.

An indoor lighting revamp is likely to dramatically change the dynamic of battles. In the past, the entire world would be darkened if you were indoors, meaning players outside could see into fully lit interiors while those looking out were at a disadvantage. This has now been somewhat rectified, although Facepunch notes that "some trickier interior spaces" are still on the old system for now. The negative effects of the new Incapacitate Dart have also been lessened to make it less overwhelming.

On the building side of things, improved line-of-sight checks should mean fewer errors while you're trying to place objects down. Wallpapers can now be applied to foundations, floors, and roof building blocks for more decoration options. Wooden external walls and gates can now be upgraded directly to Adobe, rather than needing to go through the regular stone versions. Large deployed items can be demolished with a hammer in the first ten minutes after they are placed. Wires, hoses, and pipes can now be snapped in clean orthogonal lines by holding the Left Shift key.

Elsewhere, you can assign keybinds to swap to specific vehicle seats, there's an option to drop items in the direction of your choosing, and empty shelves can now be picked up. Food spoiling has been extended to fruit, vegetables, and eggs, which will last for 48 hours when outside of a fridge. Advanced and pure variants of the new teas have been added in instances where they were missing, offering longer-duration or enhanced-effect buffs.

A new targeting attachment allows you to ping without needing to switch to binoculars. Bow weapons in turrets have been nerfed to make them less spammable in the early game, but you can now craft a large-scale 'bee bomb' for use in catapults. The stack size of wooden barricades has been halved to five in an attempt to make them PvP fights "a little less about throwing down walls" – Facepunch adds that it's considering an even stronger nerf if needed.

On the server side of things, the Rust commands list has been expanded with an option that allows you to adjust the number of players loot spawns scale to, which should ensure it doesn't get out of control for especially high-population servers. For creative mod fans, a new command block might open up a wealth of potential options. Place it down and it can store any server command and execute it when powered, with the potential to chain multiple together.
