Hyper Light Drifter dev's new game drops this year, but you can try it now

When it comes to videogames with impeccable vibes, I always think of Heart Machine. Hyper Light Drifter perfectly blends bold pixel art with evocative emptiness in a way that makes that world unforgettable. Solar Ash, meanwhile, transplants that style into a clean-cut 3D environment with some of the best scale I've ever seen. It's safe to say that Heart Machine's next game, Possessors, has caught my eye. If you can't wait either, you'll be glad to hear that there's a demo available today.

In Possessors, you play as both Luca and Rhem. Luca is a citizen of the city of Sanzu, a corporate metropolis overrun by demons, who is forced to make a deal with Rhem (who also happens to be one of those demons) in order to survive. Stuck together and forced to get along, they have a buddy cop dynamic. Both want to escape Sanzu, and they'll do whatever it takes to make that happen.

Building on its expertise from Hyper Light Drifter and Solar Ash, Heart Machine has designed Sanzu to be a haunting mega-city. That means eerie music, colossal visuals, and bold colors. Unlike Drifter's focus on the serene, though, Heart Machine describes Possessors as an action-adventure game about "mysterious sci-fi horror action." You'll still need to explore and determine the fate of the world on your own, though.

Sanzu is open-ended, which means you need to search every nook and cranny to learn what happened to the city. You can get around with a plethora of movement abilities that'd put any Metroidvania to shame, using them to both fight enemies and get past an array of platforming challenges.
