Scum is something of a mainstay in the world of survival videogames, having first entered Early Access on Steam all the way back in 2018. In the years since, it's garnered a solid reputation among players, earning itself a position alongside DayZ, Ark: Survival Evolved, Rust, and Valheim as one of the finest examples of the genre. And now, as it approaches nearly a decade of active development, the game is finally about to hit 1.0 in the very near future.
Scum puts a twist on the typical survival game premise by casting players as one of a huge group of prisoners stranded on an island with a device implanted in them that must be removed if they want to escape a televised deathmatch. Alongside the usual genre activities of scavenging and building, players can complete activities to earn fame, a spendable currency, and upgrade their character's attributes.
In its 1.0 version, Scum is set to receive a full visual overhaul and a map redesign. It will also introduce new vehicles and armed NPCs while optimizing performance and improving its anti-cheat systems.
Even without having left Early Access, Scum's been successful and well received on Steam. It currently holds a recent review rating of 82% or 'Very Positive," which bodes well for the long-awaited final version's launch. Fortunately, that wait is almost over.
Scum's 1.0 update launches on Tuesday June 17, 2025. You can grab a copy on Steam right here.
