Hell Is Us follows Remi, who is searching for his parents and returns home to his isolated hermit kingdom after many years to find it ravaged by a bloody civil war. If you're not already intrigued, at the same time, a mysterious calamity has given rise to strange, supernatural creatures that can't be defeated by modern weapons, offering a nice otherworldly twist to the formula perfected in the best action-adventure games. Armed with a drone and sword from another age, Remi must fight through the infested lands to find the cause of the creatures' appearance and put a stop to it.

Don't expect any hand-holding on your journey through Hell Is Us' atmospheric, mystical world. You're largely left to your own devices as you explore the semi-open world, as there is no map, markers, or indicators of what you should do next. The focus, then, is on exploration, and relying on your instincts. It's a refreshing take on the open-world genre and poses a different kind of challenge.

Then there's the more apparent challenge: fending off the punishing alien-like creatures that are taking over the land.
