After its new GPUs failed to chart in the last two Steam Hardware Surveys, AMD has been dealt another blow in the graphics card stats world. According to the latest figures, AMD Radeon GPU market share has now tumbled to its lowest ever figure, falling from 15% at the end of 2024 to just 8% for the first quarter of 2025.

That time period accounts for the first three months of 2025, which included the release of the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT on March 6, a card that we praised as the best gaming GPU in its league, but which has been a struggle to find in stock at its MSRP since launch. There is a bigger picture here, of course, including the fact that Nvidia released two new high-end GPUs in January, in a market sector where AMD doesn't provide any competition, with the RTX 5070 series also launching later in the quarter.

That could at least partly explain why Nvidia's market share has increased from 82% to 92% over the same period. Even so, AMD's lowest market share ever is undoubtedly a bad result, especially in the quarter where it launched its brand new GPU architecture, RDNA 4. We'll be interested to see if there's an uptick in AMD market share in the next quarter, once the Radeon RX 9070 cards have been out longer, and the new 9060 XT GPUs are in the sales figures too.

The figures come from Jon Peddie Research, which has just issued a new report detailing current sales and shipping figures for add-in graphics cards, which includes the graph above showing the change in market share. Meanwhile, Tom's Hardware has also compiled an interesting graph plotting the figures over time, and showing that this is indeed the worst market share result for AMD. In 2018, AMD still had 36.1% market share, and its figure for the first quarter of 2024 was 12%.

The figures come soon after the latest AMD GPUs were nowhere to be seen on the May Steam Survey, despite receiving universally good press. I gave one of the new GPUs a score of 9/10 in my AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT review, thanks to its amazing performance for the MSRP. However, in actuality, it's impossible to find this GPU for $599 or its international equivalent anywhere, while the RTX 5070 is readily available for $60 above MSRP in the US, and even below it in the UK.

Meanwhile, Intel's slice of GPU market share appears to be so small now that it doesn't even get a color on the graph any more, apparently dropping 1.2% further since the end of 2024. There may be a lot of online discourse about fake frames and high prices, but Nvidia is clearly still reaping in the GPU sales right now.

All of which is a shame, because AMD's latest GPUs are actually really good, and so is FSR 4. If you're thinking of upgrading, check out my new AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT review to see how the company's latest GPU copes with the latest games, as well as my GPU install guide, which takes you through the whole graphics card upgrade process.
