The final two episodes of Dispatch drop today, and I desperately need a Season 2 announcement right now
God I fucking love Dispatch. AdHoc Studios has more than embraced the spirit of what made the very best Telltale Games so good. It has it all: a fabulously eclectic cast, actual narrative-defining decisions, ridiculously funny writing that never feels out of place, and neatly embedded gameplay elements. Suffice it to say, I have had a blast following the puny Robert Robertson III through his day-to-day in the dispatch box. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, as today marks the release of Dispatch's finale.
When Dispatch was revealed at The Game Awards last year, I immediately got the game writer tinglies (I've yet to be bitten by a radioactive spider, so I'm rolling with that for now). AdHoc has some serious pedigree, having brought some of Telltale's top talent from its golden age on board. While stellar writing is enough to make a narrative game stand out, calling on some of the best actors in the business would only elevate it. Enter the Critical Role gang, Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul, and, as an extra goofy glue to tie the cast together, content creators Seán 'Jacksepticeye' McLoughlin and Charlie 'MoistCr1TiKaL' White Jr.

With this much star power, Dispatch could only have gone one of two ways: glittering success or abject failure. Fortunately, AdHoc has managed to expertly balance its myriad story beats, and provide simple, but genuinely engaging gameplay through its dispatch simulator. Though hacking minigames and click-and-choose loops may not be particularly exhilarating in isolation, I've only found myself chomping to get back behind the dispatch desk for a chance to hear the team yap at each other some more.
Dispatch's romance options may have deprived me of the opportunity to woo Malevola (I know what I am), but the chemistry between Robert and his potential suitors has had me kicking my feet from week to week. I was initially all aboard the Blazer train, but watching a pal play has fully converted me to Team Visi. After last week's heartbreaking cliffhanger, though, I fear the swooning will have to wait for now.

As a result of all of this, Dispatch has absolutely soared on Steam. Last week, Dispatch registered an all-time peak of 131,074 concurrent players according to SteamDB, and I suspect that, as the hype surrounding the game has progressively built over the course of the season, we'll see a new record set later today. It currently sports an 'Overwhelmingly Positive' Steam review score. I love it, everyone else loves it… so Season 2 when?
"We're going to have to at least think about Season 2 now," AdHoc co-founder Nick Herman says in a recent Friends Per Second podcast episode. "That was a question mark three weeks ago; it's a very cool problem to have." Meanwhile, MoistCr1TiKaL and Aaron Paul this week discussed the impact the show has had, with both stars well up for more. "I hope that you and I get to do multiple seasons of this game," Paul says; MoistCr1TiKaL agrees.
So, regardless of how today's double-bill plays out, there's a solid chance that this won't be the last we see of Robert and the Z-Team. Just know I'll be cradling my emotional support plushie later, because I have a sneaking suspicion I'm going to need it.
