If you're sick of waiting for Fallout 5, this apocalyptic RPG is an underrated gem, especially at its lowest price yet

It's been almost ten years since Fallout 4's launch. A whole decade since one of the best RPGs first hit our Steam libraries, yet a fifth mainline entry still feels miles away, no matter how much I beg for it. If you're looking for something that fits that apocalyptic vibe, but without treading into Fallout 76 territory, Atomfall is a truly underrated survival FPS that's now at its lowest price ever.

Set against the backdrop of the gorgeous vistas of the Lake District in the not-so-sunny UK, Atomfall takes the very real catastrophe of the 1950s Windscale incident and twists it into an alternate history with giant robots and woodland cults. The UK government has quarantined the area, and those left inside are forced to fend for themselves, setting up some life-or-death stakes.

You play as an amnesiac who awakens in an underground bunker, and once you leave its relative safety, you'll find yourself in the quarantine zone, five years after it was initially set up.

Your character is pretty fragile, and resources are limited, so you need to scavenge to craft weapons, avoid conflict where possible, and - if you have no other option - control your heart rate as you duke it out with the locals.

It helps that the game's atmosphere is truly spectacular. Its retro-futuristic 'atompunk' theme wonderfully juxtaposes the natural beauty of the Lake District, and while the story itself is solid, it's the emergent gameplay moments and the overall aesthetic that'll keep you hooked.
