The dreaded pile of clothes—we all have one. The so-called "clothes chair" can take different forms, but its function remains the same: it holds clean clothes that haven't been put away yet.

The clothes chair is where we toss outfits tried on but not worn, or stack clean, freshly folded laundry that hasn't been put away yet. It might even be a spot to drop clothes you plan to wear again tomorrow, like your favorite pair of leggings. However, this pile can quickly get out of hand. So, how can you reclaim this corner of your bedroom? Here are some strategies to help you manage the clothes chair once and for all.

1. Only Do One Load of Laundry at a Time

To prevent laundry from becoming overwhelming, it's crucial to manage it effectively. Instead of doing multiple loads at once and letting clean clothes pile up, focus on one load at a time. Complete the process—wash, dry, and put away—before starting the next load. This approach might seem slower, but it's actually more efficient in the long run and prevents buildup on the clothes chair.

Aim for one load per day, depending on your household size, or designate a day to tackle it all. Either way, taking control of your laundry routine is a major step toward eliminating the clothes chair clutter.

2. Never Go to Sleep with Clothes on the Chair

A clutter-free room promotes better sleep. Set a specific time each day to tidy up; this will prevent your clothes chair from overflowing. Find a time that fits your schedule, whether it's after work or during your kids' nap time. By addressing it daily, your clothes chair remains useful for quick drops but won’t become a burden.

3. Have a Designated Hook for Wear-Again Items

The clothes chair often serves as a spot for wear-again items. It offers quick access to frequently used clothes but can easily mix with freshly laundered items or those tried and discarded.

To manage this, designate a special place for daily wear items like pajamas or favorite leggings. Consider installing a hook or series of hooks on the back of the bathroom door, in your closet, or in a discreet part of your bedroom. This method prevents clutter by limiting how much can be stacked, keeping everything tidy and accessible.

4. Create a Wear-Again Zone in Your Closet

If you have extra closet space, create a wear-again zone that keeps items out of sight and reduces visual clutter. Designate a section with a few hangers for easy access. Hang them in a different direction to distinguish between clean and reusable clothes.

If the clothes chair works for you, that's perfectly fine. But if you're eager to use that space for sitting, these strategies can help make it happen.
