Ask a crowd what their favorite Final Fantasy game is, and you'll get more than a dozen responses. FF6 is a perennial pick, and FF14 makes a strong case (even if you strip it down to just the core story), but one of the most quietly revered is now back, and finally coming to PC at long last. A Final Fantasy Tactics remaster has just been confirmed as part of the latest Playstation State of Play, and marks the first time the beloved strategy game will appear on PC.

For my money, Final Fantasy Tactics (and its overhauled successor, The War of the Lions) certainly deserves a spot among the best Final Fantasy games. Adopting the setting of Ivalice, home to FF12 and Vagrant Story, it transforms the series into a turn-based strategy game. If you're familiar with the grid-based gameplay of Fire Emblem, or even the likes of XCOM 2, you'll be on solid ground to get started. Now, Final Fantasy Tactics The Ivalice Chronicles brings a new enhanced version of the game alongside a faithful port of the original.

Final Fantasy Tactics follows the tale of Ramza Beoulve, who you might be familiar with if you're an FF14 player; the young noble is also a central player in the FFT-inspired Stormblood alliance raid, Return to Ivalice. In Tactics, Ramza is thrust into the Lion War, a conflict between two factions struggling for rule. Of course, you can expect plenty of political intrigue and sinister plots as you start to tug on the threads of fate.

Combat features a wide range of jobs, with key party members bringing their own specific skill sets to the table. As you unlock more tools from a given job, you can carry some of these over even when switching out to a different class, allowing you to continually expand the options at your disposal. There's even the ability to recruit other humans, or even enemy monsters, to join your side and fight with you.

As mentioned, The Ivalice Chronicles includes two versions of Final Fantasy Tactics. There's a modernized, enhanced version which adds "fully voiced dialog, an optimized and updated UI, graphical improvements, and a number of other quality of life features, including the more accessible 'Squire' difficulty setting" for first-time players. Alternatively, those wanting a nostalgia hit can jump into the classic version, which is faithful to the 1997 original apart from a couple of small additions, such as an auto save feature.

Final Fantasy Tactics The Ivalice Chronicles launches on Tuesday, September 30.
