Key Takeaways

  • 'Barbra's Baby', a special rose variety discovered by Barbra Streisand herself, is back by popular demand.
  • The luxury rose retailer April & Ashley released just 1,000 bare-root roses for purchase on Nov. 1.
  • The coveted bare-root roses cost $40, but shoppers can also buy 'Barbra's Baby' potted year-round for $55.

Barbra Streisand’s very own rose variety has been number one in gardeners’ hearts since its release earlier this year. Streisand herself discovered this Barbie-pink rose growing out of one of the ‘Lasting Love’ rose bushes in her own yard, and she and her head gardener quickly realized that they had a brand new offspring rose variety on their hands.

The hot pink bloom—now dubbed 'Barbra’s Baby'—was propagated into its own cultivar, and rigorously tested before it was ready to be sold. Today, it’s exclusively licensed to just two nurseries, one of which is the iconic April & Ashley, a luxury farm-to-door rose retailer.

'Barbra's Baby' English Shrub Rose

A Rose in High Demand

It’s not easy to snag one of these striking celebrity flowers for your own backyard. Since 'Barbra’s Baby' is a new cultivar, there just aren’t that many of these rose bushes available. Only 2,000 rose bushes were available when 'Barbra’s Baby' first launched publicly earlier this year—and they sold out right away. Thankfully, April & Ashley has been hard at work ensuring that more roses become available before the end of 2025.

On November 1, April & Ashley will release 1,000 bare-root 'Barbra’s Baby' roses. You can order them online through the retailer and have them shipped directly to you. The bare-root roses retail for $40 and the potted roses, which are available year-round, retail for $55.

Planting and Caring for Bare-Root Roses

Bare-root roses are harvested when dormant with no leaves or foliage. This actually makes the shipping process less stressful for the plant. And that means you're more likely to successfully plant and grow it.

Bare-root roses should be planted in fall or late winter so that they’ll be ready to show off their gorgeous blooms come spring. Make sure to plant according to your hardiness zone and insulate your newly planted bare-root rose with mulch; 'Barbra’s Baby' is suitable for Zones 5-11. Avoid planting your roses in frozen soil. April & Ashley offers a complete guide to planting bare-root roses on its official website.

When temperatures warm again in spring, you should see your bare-root 'Barbra's Baby' start producing fresh green growth. In a few weeks, you'll also see perfectly pink flowers on this special English shrub rose.
