7 Ways to Upgrade Your Shower Curtain to Make Your Bathroom Feel Expensive

Are shower curtains a design staple of the past? As many contemporary homes implement frameless glass doors, we're seeing a decline in the use of shower curtains, especially in primary bathrooms. Although frameless glass doors offer a more sleek aesthetic, greater durability, and a better way to contain water, they're also more expensive and usually require professional installation. If you just can't get around using a shower curtain (or don't want to go to the hassle and expense of renovating your shower), there are a few ways to elevate the look.

Because shower curtains are so easy to swap out, you can install them quickly and refresh the space as many times as you like. Plus, there's something vintage and comforting about the simplicity of a shower curtain; its soft texture can make any bathroom feel more luxe and cozy. On the contrary, if you're not careful, a poorly styled or unkept shower curtain can make your bathroom appear dingy.

To help you make the most out of your bathroom design, we're sharing our favorite easy tips that are guaranteed to elevate your bathroom. Whether your space is big or small, these easy tricks can make your shower curtain look high-end.

1. Swap Out Plastic Rings

The easiest way to dress up your shower curtain is to ditch the plastic rings and replace them with a metal option. Take a look at your bathroom hardware and fixtures: Which metal color can you coordinate with your shower rings? As you shop for metal rings, consider a few key features to ensure a seamless and long-lasting installation. For example, look for shower curtain rings fitted with ball bearings. This mechanism allows you to glide your curtain back and forth easily and with less noise.

Alternatively, opt for a double hook design, which provides two openings: one to secure your liner and another to hang your curtain. This feature makes replacements much easier when it comes time to dispose of your liner or swap out your curtain for a restyle. Bonus: The liner side provides a few extra spots to hang your shower accessories. When in doubt, opt for non-clasp designs to avoid the need to pinch your rings together every time, and always choose rust-resistant iterations for added durability.

When selecting shower curtain rings, consider those with ball bearings for smoother movement, reduced noise, and increased durability. Opt for double hook designs to easily hang both your liner and curtain separately, allowing for straightforward replacements and more hanging options for shower accessories.

2. Invest in an Extra Long Curtain

Standard shower curtains fall at 72 inches x 72 inches. However, you can find longer lengths (ranging from 72 inches to 84 inches and above), or even order custom options depending on the size and configuration of your bathroom space. When going the custom route, just be sure to measure the height of your shower or bathtub area for a perfect fit. Also, consider the height of your shower rod, especially if you plan to mount it higher for a more visually appealing effect. Extra-long curtains can visually expand your bathroom space, making it appear taller and larger than it actually is.

3. Don't Use a Clear Plastic Liner

Today's shower liners are typically made from synthetic materials like polyester, thanks to their water-resistant or water-repellent properties. However, choosing a poor-quality liner risks requiring double replacements and leaving you with a low-end look. For a fail-safe choice, go for a white fabric liner constructed of polyester, canvas, or other natural fiber iterations (that are either mildew-resistant, water-repellent, and/or machine washable). Unlike stiff, clear plastic shower liners that feel hard to touch, fabric shower liners tend to be more fluid and softer. Just be sure to look for liners topped with rust-resistant metal grommets, as a trail of rust streaking your liner can be very unsightly.

4. Keep It Clean

Another easy and effective way to achieve a high-end look with a shower curtain is to keep it clean and well-maintained. Maintain your shower liner (and curtain) by following each textile's care instructions. Although you'll need to maintain your liner more frequently than your curtain (as it's in direct contact with water), it's crucial to treat any stains, debris, or dust that accumulate on both your shower curtain and liner. A clean curtain liner duo itself will make your space feel more luxurious and fresh.

5. Iron Any Creases or Wrinkles

Nothing blurs the beauty, color, and pattern of a beautiful curtain than wrinkles and creases. When possible, either drop off your curtains at your local dry cleaner for professional pressing or use a steam iron in a grid-like fashion, tackling one section at a time while they hang. This extra step will give your curtain a smooth texture and a uniform look, helping it drape elegantly over your tub or shower stall. Additionally, steaming away wrinkles can give you that high-end feel typically found in a spa or hotel atmosphere.

6. Personalize It

For a personalized touch, consider investing in a custom shower curtain featuring bespoke fabrics, designs, or monograms. The type of customization you gear towards will depend on your personal style. For example, monograms yield a more traditional look and will add a timeless element to your bathroom decor. You can also coordinate your shower curtain with other bathroom accessories, such as towels, bath mats, and wall art.

7. Add a Trim

From solid border trims to tassels and pom-poms, you'd be surprised to see how quickly you can bring a dull shower curtain to life. Depending on which trim you pick, you'll end up with a look that's sophisticated, playful, casual, or formal.
