Warframe The Old Peace is pulling me back in as Digital Extremes shows The Devil's Triad in action (yes, there's kissing)

Upcoming Warframe expansion The Old Peace is shaping up to be a huge win for developer Digital Extremes. The studio has been teasing us with the next chapter of its free Steam game for several months now, but now it's blown the doors off to give our most comprehensive look at everything from the new quest to romancing The Devil's Triad. For Warframe Devstream 190, creative director Rebecca Ford (dressed as Hideo Kojima) is joined by CEO Steve Sinclair, design director Pablo Alonso, community director Megan Everett, and Soulframe lead Geoff Crookes to show us a glimpse into the future.

The two key components to Warframe: The Old Peace are its quest of the same name, which delves into the Tau System, and The Devil's Triad, which is what our focus is on today. The trio in question refers to three Protoframes for Harrow, Wisp, and Uriel, and will also introduce the latter's 'Devil Warframe' to proceedings. Ford invites players to imagine themselves in the wake of the new questline. "The Old Peace changes things. It creates meaning and differences in the world you knew."

Heading to the Sanctum Anatomica, you're going to attempt to rectify this squad that's been "broken" by Warframe's notorious scientist, Entrati. "The bidding that he has for this group will be yours to discover." All three Protoframe designs are looking fantastic, although Wisp's 'Marie Leroux' look is certain to be a real winner. "You can make a baddie goth nun, whatever you like," Ford teases as the team explores the color customization options. Roathe wins special points from me for the unflappable presence of René Zagger, the voice of FF14's Emet-Selch.

All three of the characters (Lyon, Marie, and Roathe) will be romanceable, and it works a little differently from the Hex progression in 1999. Because this is considered a separate era, you can date one of The Devil's Triad members without it impacting your existing relationship. While they won't move in, you can take your chosen partner on dates around the world, where you'll learn their feelings on the state of things and other key players in the narrative, with the ability to snap some nice photos. Ford notes that this feature will come over to 1999 if it proves popular, and also reassures us, "Of course there's kissing."

Another big draw will naturally be the Uriel Warframe, bringing us up to a new total of 63. We'll have to wait a little longer for a complete gameplay breakdown, but we do get to see him in action (from the 43:20 mark). Uriel is joined in battle by three buddies, and he's capable of entering "a mode of balefire and brimstone" that allows you to spin endlessly through the skies with his bullet jump. "You are a blaze, a meteor of fire," and can hop in and out of it to stall in the air and use other skills.

The Operator and Drifter rework allows you to dramatically enhance the customization options of your player character. Quite frankly, these are a staggering step up from what we've had so far, with the new-look hair in particular standing out as a major improvement. Head to the 50-minute mark to see it for yourself and begin planning your fresh style.

The final thing we get to see today is The Descendia, a giant tower that pushes you to fight through 21 floors, with additional characters stepping in to help you at seven-stage landmarks. This plays out weekly, and there are checkpoints so you don't have to do the full progression in a single sitting. With plenty of rewards to earn, it's definitely a format I could see myself coming back to regularly. To round out the showcase, the team reveals that Gyre Prime is our next special upgrade, and will arrive alongside The Old Peace.

The Warframe: The Old Peace release date will fall sometime in December 2025. We'll get another, more in-depth look of everything that's involved during a dev stream later in November.
