Frostpunk 2 dev shares emergency crash fix as master city builders reach settlement sizes previously thought impossible
Frostpunk 2 is a brutal tale of survival in a frozen wasteland; every day a desperate struggle to balance limited resources among a community rife with in-fighting and factional friction. 30 years on from a devastating blizzard, the last inhabitants of Earth are struggling to hold out against an endless winter. Yet entrepreneurial players forged in the fires of the best city-building games won't be cowed so easily, and now developer 11 bit studios has been forced to step in due to players achieving build sizes that were previously thought to be impossible.
"Starting from the very first day of our Frostpunk 2 journey, we were stunned by the size of some of your Utopia Builder creations, which sometimes felt to us as not achievable during a regular playthrough," the studio writes in the patch notes for Frostpunk 2 hotfix 1.4.2. The sandbox mode lifts limits on play time, allowing you to grow your settlement as much as you can and letting you enjoy all the social and infrastructural complexities that arise as a result.
"Unfortunately, as beautiful a sight as it is, some of you were reaching out to us to say that, at some point, your favorite save file is no longer loading, or the game is crashing." Players encountering this error were presented with a message reading, "Maximum number of UObjects exceeded when trying to add object(s)." 11 bit explains that this happens when a world hits "the limit of how many objects the game engine can handle safely," causing Frostpunk 2 to shut down.

"We've had numerous internal discussions about how to address this issue, aside from regular optimization work," 11 bit continues. Ultimately, it's decided to explain to players how to manually adjust the object limit, although it warns that this method "should be used only as a final solution and only against the crash containing the above message." It also cautions against employing it if you're not a high-end user boasting the best gaming PC.
If you've encountered such an issue, the full method is listed in the latest patch notes, and it involves finding the 'Engine.ini' file in the game's app data folder and including two additional lines of text. "Frostpunk 2 was not designed and optimized past this point," 11 bit stresses for one final time, "and you should monitor your PC memory when playing. Don't apply this change until you are experiencing the above crash."
Frostpunk 2 hotfix 1.4.2 is live now. Among the other changes are fixes for the economy overlays not reacting to keyboard and mouse inputs, missing tooltips, and problems with the startup for chapter five.
Once you've managed to build the Frostpunk 2 colony of your dreams, we've pulled together the best survival games on PC right now for your next challenge.
