With the Old Farmers Almanac predicting the third hottest summer on record in a row this year, you can confidently assume that heat waves are on the way, and staying cool is as important as ever. Of course, air conditioning is an obvious way to keep the heat at bay, but you don’t want to spend your whole summer inside, and not everyone is able to keep their air on 24/7.

Plus, many air conditioners can only lower the temperature a certain amount, which might not be enough when extreme temperatures can reach 115°F. Conditions like that call for pulling out all the stops.

Whether you’re out and about, driving through town, or chilling at home, here are a few ways to beat the heat when the thermometer surges.

How to Combat a Heat Wave While Outside

Being outside in the heat presents many challenges. Staying out of the sun is obviously one of the most effective ways to keep cool, but sometimes, you don’t have that option. To prepare for heat, bring your own shade with an umbrella or parasol. They'll not only help keep you cool, but you can find many on the market with fabric that protects you from most of the sun’s harmful rays.

Staying hydrated is one of the most important ways to stay healthy and safe during a heat wave, so bringing a reusable water bottle with you is essential. To keep your water refreshingly cold all day long, select an insulated tumbler and add a generous amount of ice.

A cooling neck band or towel can provide instant relief from the heat and make being out on hot days more bearable. These items are typically marketed toward activities like biking and hiking, but they make a noticeable difference when you’re simply trying to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Tips for Cooling Down Your Car

Nothing is worse than getting into your car when the sun has been beating down on it for hours. One preventative step you can take is using a screen to cover your windshield and block out rays, keeping your seats and dashboard cool while your car is parked.

You can also get a cooling seat cushion—not only does it keep your back off a hot and sticky leather seat, but it also circulates air to keep you cool and dry, helping you get to your destination feeling fresh as a daisy.

Rolling down the windows is another effective way to stay cool in the car when you’re driving, but if you’re sitting in traffic, the air can become stagnant. Invest in a portable car fan to bring the breeze with you wherever you go (and no matter how slow you go!).

Prepping Your Home for a Heat Wave

Many who don’t mind the heat during the day still struggle at night, when the increased temperatures can make sleeping tough. At a minimum, choose cooling sheets with materials that wick away moisture, keeping you more comfortable all night long. Remember to keep your windows open at night to let in a nice breeze.

Another option that works day and night is a personal thermostat. This piece of wearable tech creates cooling and warming sensations to keep you at your perfect temperature no matter the weather.

If you're trying to reduce your AC usage, get a little creative: Get something to cover your windows while the sun is at its highest, invest in a couple oscillating fans to create a cross breeze, and collect all the grilling, salad, and air fryer recipes you can find to avoid turning on your oven.
