Google Is Ending Support for Old Nest Thermostats on October 25, so Grab the New Model While It’s Marked Down

Earlier this year, Google announced it will no longer support its 1st and 2nd generations of Google Nest. The Google Nest support cancellation officially goes into effect on October 25, and thousands of older devices will be affected. If you use an older generation of the Google Nest smart thermostat to heat and cool your home, you’ll need to buy a new one, otherwise, your device will be disconnected and removed from the Nest and Google Home app. Additionally, the emergency shut-off feature will cease working, and you’ll no longer be able to control the device remotely, receive notifications, or change your settings from your phone or tablet; however, you will be able to manually adjust the thermostat on older models.

Luckily, Google Nest support for the 3rd and 4th generations of the Google Nest Learning Thermostat will not be affected. However, there are only a few days left to grab a newer model before your old one stops working digitally. Since we’ve tested the 3rd generation smart thermostat ourselves and even named it “Best Design,” here’s everything you need to know about buying a newer version.

The Google Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen) will still work after the Google Nest support cutoff. We named this smart thermostat “Best Design” due to its sleek look, polished metal finishes, and high-resolution display. Not only does it display the temperature indoors, but it also automatically lights up and displays outdoor temps, the weather, and time when you enter the room. It even tracks energy usage and has an eco-setting option that automatically adjusts the temperature when no one is home.

This model is compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant, and other WiFi-enabled controllers. It is programmable and can even learn your home’s personal schedule and the temperatures you like during each time of day. This smart thermometer programs itself to help you save energy (and money). The Nest Leaf icon will appear on the smart device when you choose an energy-saving temperature. It also monitors your HVAC system to make sure it’s working properly, and provides maintenance reminders when necessary. However, before buying, we recommend double-checking its compatibility (which you can verify online), as it does not work with older HVAC systems or furnaces.

We also love that it comes in several colors, including brass, stainless steel, black, and copper—though it has already sold out in some styles the closer we get to the cancellation deadline. Right now, it’s on sale at Amazon for $210.

The Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) will also continue to work after Google Nest support is phased out. If you prefer more updated features, this model includes many settings that the 3rd gen doesn’t. This includes a customizable home screen that can display time, temperature, weather, humidity, outdoor air quality, and more (versus a static screen), and energy-saving implementations that can either run automatically or require you to opt-in through the Google Home app. The 4th gen is also the most compatible Google Nest to date. It doesn’t require a C-wire (or common wire) for installation and works with most 24-volt home systems when connected to WiFi, like most smart thermostats.

It also includes the Nest Temperature Sensor (not compatible with the 3rd gen), which measures temperatures more in-depth to eliminate hot and cold spots in any given room. And while the 3rd gen also requires the separate Nest app, the 4th gen offers full functionality and control in the Google Home app, condensing all of your smart home devices into one hub. It even has a 60% larger display than the 3rd generation, and is enabled with Smart Schedule (versus the 3rd gen’s Auto-Schedule program). Smart Schedule learns your preferred temperatures, responds to your preferences over time, and can provide suggestions—rather than automatic updates—based on your usage patterns.

With Google Nest support ending October 25, it’s the best time to upgrade to a supported model. If you want to maintain compatibility with your other Google smart home devices, there’s still time to upgrade to a newer model while they’re still on sale. Right now, you can buy the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen) on sale at Amazon for $210, or the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) on sale for $250.
