Dynasty Warriors still isn't a Western hit, dev says, despite Origins' success

Dynasty Warriors Origins is one of the most celebrated entries to the long-running action RPG series to date, marking a strong return to the series seven years after the launch of Dynasty Warriors 9. Though it's seemed like a high point for Omega Force, the team also responsible for games like Wild Hearts, Persona 5 Strikers, and, of course, a huge catalog of Warriors games, its producer and director has remarked that Origins' success doesn't mean his studio considers the Dynasty Warriors series itself as a Western hit.

Our review of Dynasty Warriors Origins called the action game "an essential ARPG for fresh-faced players and grizzled veterans alike," praising its combat and narrative focus. And yet, its creators still want the Warriors games to find a bigger audience in the West.

In a recent interview, Omega Force director and producer Tomohiko Sho was asked about Origin's success and the entire Dynasty Warriors series' popularity across different international regions. Though the game has received broadly warm reviews, strong Steam player counts, and has sold more than a million copies to date, Sho says that he "[believes] that the Dynasty Warriors series is not yet in a position to be called a success in the West."

He adds that Origins helped the series "attract new fans in addition to those we have had since the PlayStation 2 era," but that there's still "great potential for the series to gain many fans in the future."

"The Western market is very important," Sho concludes, "and I believe that if there is a next title, we will gain even more fans."
