4 Fall Kitchen Decor Trends Designers Can't Get Enough of This Season

As kitchens become larger and more personal, decorating them for the seasons make sense. After all, many of us will entertain in our kitchens at least once between now and the end of the year. But how do you decorate a kitchen for fall without getting in the way of actual cooking?

"Always start with function," says designer Emma Corner. "Declutter first, then introduce layers that feel personal and seasonal." We spoke with designers to get their best tips on autumn kitchen decor that feels fresh and modern, while leaving plenty of room for fall baking.

1. Decorate with Earthy Linens

Swapping out your linens is a practical way to reflect the new season. Replace white or pastel linens for earth-toned ones in plaids, stripes, or solids. Think about changing out your dish towels, washcloths, tablecloths, and even lamp shades if you have a countertop lamp or sconces in your kitchen. If you have kitchen window treatments, consider swapping out your curtains for an earthy plaid option.

"I absolutely love using linens," says designer Caren Rideau. "They are such an easy and effective way to transform a kitchen space."

For color, designers recommend earth tones or deep jewel tones for your fall linens. You can also add texture, such as a loosely woven linen for your tablecloth, which easily gives off the hearty vibe of autumn. Needlework is another texture to look for, such as crocheted potholders or a delicate lace tablecloth.

2. Add Temporary Mood Lighting

Fall brings fewer daylight hours and a need for more lighting. This extends to the kitchen, where designers are layering permanent fixtures, countertop lamps, and candles.

"Layered lighting adds depth and comfort, whether from under-cabinet fixtures, pendants, or even a small counter lamp," Corner says. "The overall effect is an inviting mix of utility and beauty."

Any additional lighting you add to kitchenthe should be easy to move, or out of the way. Under-counter lighting or plug-in sconces are good options, as are handled candle holders. If you have lots of space, a small lamp with a cloth shade will add instant coziness.

3. Embrace Unexpected Materials

Display produce you'll actually cook with to decorate for fall in a way that doesn't disrupt the flow of cooking. This means skipping hard pumpkins and gourds, and choosing pomegranates, artichokes, apples, root vegetables, and even citrus fruit.

"Not only does it add color to the space, but it also serves as a reminder of the season’s bounty," says Rideau. If you have a lot of produce, a large bowl will look beautiful when filled. For smaller quantities, line up your produce on open shelves, or layer small bowls of different produce types throughout the kitchen.

4. Display Fresh Foliage

Long cut branches with vibrant fall leaves remains en vogue among designers for autumn kitchen decor. You need height to make this look work, so plan to place your vase on the kitchen island, on top of a cabinet, or even the refrigerator. Choose one to three branches with a number of leaves on them. Cut with sharp shears, and then pound the base of the branch for better water absorption. For display, choose a clear glass vessel or one made of a rustic material, such as clay.
