So much time in a city building or strategy game like Frostpunk 2, Factorio, or Rimworld is spent carefully considering how to build a functioning society and keep it safe from harm. Dawn Apart, on the other hand, wants its players to enjoy not just the creative process, but also the destruction of their hard work when disaster strikes. Dawn Apart looks, at first, like a pretty traditional colony management game in the style of Rimworld or Timberborn. Players are responsible for using their population of workers to locate resources and process them into new forms by creating increasingly complex production facilities. They also need to keep that population healthy by providing medicine, food, and places to live while it increases in size.

What distinguishes Dawn Apart, though, is the chaos allowed by its setting. This surfaces on a physical level, with a destruction system that can see the game's blocky voxel constructions blown apart, but also in a narrative that complicates its sci-fi premise by incorporating difficult choices regarding potential colony rebellions, production demands, environmental concerns, and the presence of natural and sentient alien threats.
