New space roguelike feels like a sequel to FTL set in the Warhammer 40k universe

FTL: Faster Than Light is one of the all-time great roguelikes, having stood the test of time alongside contemporaries like Don't Starve, Spleunky, and Darkest Dungeon. Surprisingly, though, its hectic design principles, formed largely around maintaining a space ship as it journeys through a dangerous galaxy, hasn't inspired many games in the time since. Void War looks to fill that, well, void in the genre, filtering FTL-style play through Warhammer 40,000's narrative and visual trappings for a spiritual successor to the latter set to launch tomorrow on Steam.

Void War is a space game where players are put in charge of a notably gothic styled starship attempting to travel across a swath of space controlled by a declining 'Solar Empire.' Similar to FTL, actually running this starship and keeping its crew alive forms the core challenge involved with completing the game. Players can upgrade and manage the various components of their ship for the fights bound to take place with enemy types like pirates, soldiers, and cultists. They can also recruit and customize crew members drawn from six different factions, assembling a force capable of boarding enemy ships for up-close combat.

There's a lot of Warhammer 40K DNA in the game's narrative and visual style. It features hulking soldiers, a mix of grimy medieval and futuristic sci-fi aesthetics, and a cast of characters that includes, per Void War's Steam page, "technocultist magi, Imperial deserters, demon lords" and "demented cultists."
