New Delta Force update adds strategic mode from Battlefield and Hell Let Loose

Whether it's Insurgency or Call of Duty, Counter-Strike 2 or Rainbow Six Siege, I often have the same problem with every online FPS game. It varies depending on the lobby and the player base, and there are some games that mitigate it more than others, but generally, it's like everybody is out for themselves. These are meant to be multiplayer games – team deathmatches – but every individual is operating in isolation, and we're all working for our own kill-death ratio and XP gains. Battlefield 4's Commander mode tried to inject more direction and strategy. Likewise, the Commander role in Hell Let Loose, which, perhaps more than any online shooter, does feel like a team game. But I'd like to see it more. That's why the new Delta Force update has my attention.

Step by step, Delta Force feels like it's becoming a much more rounded, more credible Battlefield rival. The campaign just had a vital update, and with full controller support included, and further tweaks and additions arriving regularly now, Team Jade's FPS game is a veritable alternative to the genre's longstanding titans. As for the latest update, which arrives in full tomorrow, Friday May 30, it introduces a new, limited-time mode that should be familiar to the Battlefield and Hell Let Loose devout.

Victory Unite is a new version of Delta Force's large-scale Warfare game mode. If you want your matches to feel more tactical, more professional, and more realistic, it allows you and the rest of your team to appoint one player as Commander. That Commander enters an exclusive chat lobby with the captains of each squad. As well as directing the flow of battle from there, they also gain the ability to call in attacks on specific locations, essentially providing orders and extra fire support in parts of the map where they're most needed.

As it stands, Victory Unite feels like a test version for a full Commander mode that could be released for Delta Force later – Team Jade hasn't suggested as much, but given that you can currently only access Victory Unite Warfare games if you've reached the Lieutenant rank, it feels like a dress rehearsal before going live for the shooter's whole player base.
