It seemed like videogames had reached a zombie saturation point about a decade ago. The popularity of Telltale's The Walking Dead, Dying Light, Dead Island, Left 4 Dead 2, and Killing Floor 2 appeared to have reached a height that the horror subgenre would never return to going forward. This isn't the case anymore, with recent games like the zombie infested, This War of Mine-inspired Into the Dead garnering plenty of interest on Steam, something that doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon thanks to the game's first big update since launch.

Into the Dead arrived in Early Access a little over a month ago, and the zombie game is already moving steadily toward its full version with its initial update. Content Update #1 adds a number of substantial new features along with bug fixes and design tweaks.

One of the most impactful of these additions is a new system called 'Curveballs.' As the name suggests, Curveballs are random events that can drastically alter the player's plans by helping or harming their shelter. Into the Dead's first update also adds in the ability to crash through unlocked doors at a run and an expanded number of throwable items, like pebbles, bricks, and pipe bombs. Alongside all of this is a new starting shelter in the Walton, Texas setting's Seneca city district and a feature that sees some killed survivors return to the game as monstrous zombified versions of themselves.

Considering that Into the Dead has only been available for a bit more than a month, an update this substantial looks like a good sign for the game's progress.
