Supergroups have been around since the early days of rock, but the 1990s saw an influx of collaborative unions featuring known musicians that truly saw supergroups become a more common occurrence in the rock and metal world.

While the grunge era had a big hand in some of these supergroups such as Temple of the Dog, Mad Season and The Breeders, supergroups were already occurring as the decade began with Styx's Tommy Shaw, Night Ranger's Jack Blades and Ted Nugent consistently hitting the rock charts as Damn Yankees.

The '90s also featured supergroups that included members of Pantera, Nirvana, Faith No More, Guns N' Roses, Slayer, Alice in Chains, Dream Theater, Melvins, Corrosion of Conformity, Sunny Day Real Estate, Lagwagon and plenty more.
