From plane passengers and office workers to firefighters and police officers, thousands of victims perished in a matter of hours. But exactly how many people died on 9/11? The actual death toll is difficult to determine. While the official number stands at 2,977 not including the 19 terrorists that may be an underestimate. For one, the complete destruction of the World Trade Center and the potential presence of undocumented workers within casts doubt on the true tally of victims.Whats more, in the years since 2001, thousands of people have succumbed to cancer and other diseases caused by exposure to the toxins at Ground Zero. Today, these deaths outnumber the victim count from the actual attacks. For these reasons, the true 9/11 death toll may never be known, adding yet another layer of tragedy to one of the most horrific days in Americas history.The Terrorist Attacks Of September 11, 2001The worlds deadliest terrorist attack began just after 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001. As the morning advanced, it slowly became clear that something terrible was happening in the skies. At 8:19 a.m., flight attendant Betty Ann Ong alerted ground personnel that a possible hijacking was taking place aboard American Airlines Flight 11. I think were getting hijacked, she stated in a recorded phone call.But the terrorists werent only aboard Flight 11. They had also hijacked United Airlines Flight 175, American Airlines Flight 77, and United Airlines Flight 93. All 19 men were affiliated with the Islamic terrorist group al Qaeda, and they planned to launch a broad attack on centers of power in the United States. At 8:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City, tearing through floors 93 to 99. Many more office workers and visitors were trapped on the higher levels of the World Trade Center with no way to escape.Then, at 9:37 a.m., American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. Less than 30 minutes later, the South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed, dooming anyone still inside as well as the first responders whod raced to the scene. The final hijacked flight, United Airlines Flight 93, may have been aiming for the U.S. Capitol, but its passengers overpowered the hijackers. It instead crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at 10:03 a.m.The initial horrors of the morning came to an end 25 minutes later, when the North Tower collapsed. Then, the true extent of the tragedy started to unfold. On the ground, 125 people were killed, including 55 military personnel. On the plane, 53 passengers and six crew members lost their lives. Similarly, the flight manifest for United Airlines Flight 93 helped determine who had died when the plane crashed near Shanksville. Seven crew members and 33 passengers were killed, including Todd Beamer, Mark Bingham, Jeremy Glick, and Tom Burnett, who led the charge to retake control of the plane from the hijackers before it crashed. On American Airlines Flight 11, the first plane that hit the Twin Towers, 76 passengers and 11 crew members were killed. And on United Airlines Flight 175, an additional 51 passengers and nine crew members died, including the youngest victim of 9/11: two-year-old Christine Lee Hanson. Why The Number Is Difficult To DetermineIts hard to say exactly how many people died on 9/11 for several reasons. While the death tolls from the Pentagon and the four flights were simple to determine, calculating the number of victims in New York City wasnt so straightforward.The complete destruction of the World Trade Center meant that many bodies were essentially incinerated. As NPR reported in 2025, investigators recovered 21,905 partial remains, including small shards of bone. Many fragments were too destroyed for investigators to properly test. The fire, the water that was used to put out the fire, the sunlight, the mold, bacteria, insects, jet fuel, diesel fuel, chemicals in those buildings all these things destroy DNA, Mark Desire, the assistant director of forensic biology at the New York City medical examiners office, explained to NPR. Whats more, the presence of undocumented workers at the World Trade Center has also made it difficult to determine how many people died on 9/11. Without knowing exactly how many people were in the building when the planes struck, its impossible to accurately estimate the number of victims particularly if they had no legitimate documents linking them to the site.And while nearly 3,000 people perished on Sept. 11, 2001, thousands more have died in the years since. Tens of thousands of people were exposed to toxins at Ground Zero, from asbestos and silica to heavy metals and fiberglass. According to the CDC, more than 120,000 people have enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Program, which provides free medical care to anyone whose health was impacted by the collapse of the Twin Towers. As of 2023, at least 6,781 of those enrollees had died of illness or cancer linked to Ground Zero.As such, the number of people who died because of 9/11 is much higher than 2,977. And those people are more than just a number. The victims of the terrorist attack came from a wide variety of states and dozens of different countries. They included a toddler going to Disneyland, an elderly couple traveling to a wedding, and more than 400 first responders. One financial firm lost 658 employees in a matter of hours. These people all had a name, a story, and hopes for the future until their lives were tragically cut short on Sept. 11, 2001.
