Wax notebook, silk tp found in medieval latrine
A unique medieval wood and wax notebook has been found intact with its leather case inside a latrine in Paderborn, Germany. It dates to the 13th or 14th century, and is in exceptional condition, preserved by the archaeological miracle that is ancient human waste.Archaeologists overseen by the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Association (LWL) discovered the notebook in an excavation before construction of a new city administration building. Obscured in a wet clump of earth (night soil?) that smelled exactly as bad as you imagine, the object only revealed its secret identity was after conservators at the LWL restoration workshop cleaned it.It is made of wood and consists of ten pages coated with wax so they could be written on and then reused. Eight of the pages are on both sides of four leaves; the first and last pages are the insides of the cover and back. The book was so tightly bound that conservators only had to clean the outside. The inner pages were completely clean, the wood unwarped and the thin layers of wax still perfectly intact complete with the original text written with a stylus. The text is written in two directions, depending on how the book was held, but it appears to be from a single hand. [Dr. Sveva Gai, the LWL city archaeologist in Paderborn]: That suggests it was used spontaneously as a notebook.Regarding the writing implement, Bretzel explains: The stylus is pointed at one end to scratch the letters into the wax. The other end of the stylus was flat or spatula-shaped. This allowed the wax to be smoothed and the writing erased, making the tablet reusable. []The wax still covers all the inner surfaces of the tablets and is largely inscribed with cursive script. Gai: The Latin languagealso an indication of an upper-class ownerand the characteristics of the cursive script date this book to the period between the 13th and the end of the 14th century. The wax, however, doesnt just show the most recently written pages. The rubbing of an older script is still clearly legible. The full text has not yet been transcribed, although it next on the agenda. The writing is difficult to decipher because spelling and handwriting were idiosyncratic. Researchers hope revealing the content of the notebook will shed light on who the author might have been and what he was using the book for. The center of Paderborn in the Middle Ages had upper middle class homes and its possible the notebook belonged to a merchant who was recording his transactions. The leather binding is decorated with an embossed pattern of fleurs-de-lis that cover the surface. This may suggest it originated in France, but the flower also symbolized purity and the favor of God, so it may have nothing to do with the French monarchy. The first priority is to stabilize the organic materials of the notebook. The wood and wax will be analyzed to determine their composition, the resin mixture, any pigments that may have been added, melting point, etc. The leather pouch and wood are currently in distilled water which is being changed regularly to keep the materials from becoming brittle. Meanwhile, the excavation is ongoing. Other objects found in the five latrines discovered at the site include stave barrels, a knife, proto-stoneware pottery and curious silk fabric remnants that were torn into rectangular pieces. Archaeologists suggest these were scraps left from worn clothes that were torn to use as a very luxurious toilet paper.Silk as toilet paper also suggests to Gai the authors elevated status: As soon as this latrine can be assigned to a specific plot of land, archival research could be used to try to identify the residents of that plot. Then, in the best-case scenario, it would be possible to link the wax tablet to the name of a specific person.

The Tumultuous Life Of John Gotti Jr., The Son Of Infamous Mob Boss John Gotti
The name John Gotti, even decades after his imprisonment and death, is still notorious to anyone who knows anything about the Mob. And John Junior Gotti, the son of the infamous mob boss who made headlines throughout the 1980s and 90s, knows this better than anyone. In fact, John Angelo Gotti (technically John Gotti III but widely known as Junior) once followed in his fathers footsteps and joined the family business until he decided it was time to give it up and walk away.Susan Watts/NY Daily News Archive via Getty ImagesJohn A. Gotti, a.k.a. Junior, stands outside his house in Massapequa, New York in 1995. The son of John Gotti, Junior joined the Gambino family before ultimately leaving the criminal underworld. This is the story of John Gottis son and the life of crime he left behind.Growing Up As The Son Of John GottiJohn Gotti Jr. was born February 14, 1964, in Queens, New York. He may not have seen his father much when he was a kid, but what he did see certainly left an impression. When Gotti Jr. was just five by which point his dad had already been in trouble with the law many times John Gotti began a three-year prison sentence in Pennsylvania after pleading guilty to cargo hijacking charges.Gotti Jr.s friends didnt even believe he had a father. One day in 1972, they were teasing young Gotti about not having a dad. Gotti Jr. said his father was away on business, but his friends only scoffed. But then a car pulled up. As Gotti Jr. remembered in an interview with 60 Minutes:Almost on cue, this brown Lincoln Continental Mark IV with smoked windows at the time when nobody had smoked windows comes rolling down the street. And it stops right by me. Then the window rolls down. And I turn, and I says, Theres my father. Everybody was in shock. He goes, Wheres the house? Cause he didnt know where we lived. So I says, The second house with the corner with the green awning, Dad. Ill see you over there.'Only three years later, Gotti Jr.s father was back in prison for a two-year term on attempted manslaughter charges. And though John Gotti Jr. loved his dad despite these absences, he always knew that his father put the mob lifestyle ahead of everything else. There was nothing he didnt like about [his life]. My father lived that life 24/7, Gotti Jr. later said. In fact, his wife and kids were second to the streets. He loved it. He loved the code. He loved the action. And action sometimes meant violence. On May 18, 1980, when he was 16, a neighbor accidentally ran over his younger brother, 12-year-old Frankie Gotti, while he was riding his bike outside the house.John Gotti Jr. recalls the accident that killed his brother and its aftermath in this clip from a 2010 interview with 60 Minutes.John Gotti never showed much emotion about the tragedy in public, but things were different behind closed doors. Gotti Jr. later recounted, [I]n my bedroom the vent was attached to his den, and I would hear him cry.My mother was inconsolable, he continued. She was upstairs on tranquilizers.John Favara, the neighbor who accidentally killed Frankie Gotti, vanished after he was abducted by several men four months later. Gotti Jr. later acknowledged that his father was probably involved in that disappearance.Whatever innocence John Gotti Jr. may have still had about his fathers life surely vanished after that point. Now, the infamous John Gottis son was on the verge of becoming a man himself and for him, that meant joining the family business.Life In The Mob As John Gottis SonJohn Pedin/NY Daily News Archive via Getty ImagesJohn Junior Gotti (right) leaves Queens Criminal Court with his father (left) after the formers acquittal on a charge of assaulting an off-duty police officer in a 1985 restaurant brawl. In 1985, John Gotti became the leader of the Gambino crime family upon executing a plan to kill the current boss, Paul Castellano. With his fathers power now cemented, Junior Gotti became a rising star in the New York underworld.Authorities believe that Gotti Jr. became an official member of the Gambino family in 1988 and became the youngest capo (captain) in the familys history just two years later when he was still in his mid-20s. Hed already been learning the ropes in the various rackets including gambling and loansharking since 1982, but now he was a mobster himself. As Gotti Jr. later said of his induction into the Gambino family and his fathers reaction to it:When my father embraced me, put his arm around me, and looked at me as a street guy, as a knock-around guy, a bounce-around guy like himself, proudest moment of my life. Was the proudest moment of my life because I was slowly becoming like him.But not long after John Gottis son was inducted into the Mob, the elder Gottis life on the streets ended.Yvonne Hemsey/Liaison via Getty ImagesJohn Gotti, center, enters the Brooklyn Federal courthouse with fellow mobster Sammy The Bull Gravano in May 1986.Gotti Jr. said that his fathers credo was simple: At the end of the day, you gotta die or go to jail. And thats precisely what happened to John Gotti when he was convicted of racketeering and murder charges in 1992 thanks to the turncoat testimony of Mob killer Sammy The Bull Gravano and sentenced to life in prison.According to authorities, Junior Gotti began acting as the Gambino familys head of operations after his father went to prison. As an immediate family member, Gotti Jr. was allowed to visit his father in prison and he relayed his messages and orders to his criminal associates on the outside.By all accounts, Gotti Jr. ran the family business throughout the 1990s until the law caught up with him, too. In 1998, federal authorities charged him with a broad range of crimes, including loansharking, bookmaking, and extortion.Faced with a mountain of evidence, John Gotti Jr. accepted a plea deal to serve nearly seven years in prison. Just before doing so, he met with his father, who tried to convince him to fight the charges and remain a member of the Mob. It was the last time the two would ever see each other. The elder Gotti died of throat cancer on June 10, 2002.And despite his fathers wishes, Junior Gotti accepted the plea deal and began a decade-long process of extricating himself from the criminal life he was born into. Why John Gotti Jr. Finally Left The Mafia BehindDuring that final conversation, John Gotti did try to convince his son to fight the charges but he ultimately relented. John, if this is what you want to do, youre your own, man, the elder Gotti said. But they will never leave you alone. The government will never accept it. You think theyre going to stop if you plead guilty? Theyll just bring another case. And another case.Thats precisely what happened. Even after Gotti Jr. served time for the plea deal (getting out early in 2002), authorities indicted him repeatedly for old crimes ranging from drug trafficking to racketeering and murder. These charges included a plan to kill radio host Curtis Sliwa, the founder of the Guardian Angels volunteer crime prevention group, for bad-mouthing his father on air. However, prosecutors were never able to secure a conviction. John Gotti Jr. spent most of the 2000s fighting legal battles and he beat the charges each time. Finally, in 2009, the latest in a string of mistrials related to Gotti Jr.s racketeering charges convinced authorities to give up the fight and let him walk free.John A. Gotti/InstagramJohn Gotti Jr. (right) with family in 2019.Since then, Junior Gotti has said that all he wants is to be a dad to his six kids and a husband to his wife, Kimberly. The Quiet Life Of Junior Gotti TodayDespite still being widely known as both John Gottis son and a former mobster himself, John Gotti Jr. has indeed been living the relatively quiet life of a family man since his 2009 trial. Nevertheless, he put himself back in the spotlight with his 2015 memoir Shadow of My Father, a film version of which was released in 2018.The trailer for Gotti, the biopic that John Gotti Jr. believed did a poor job of capturing the true story of his infamous fathers life.Gotti Jr. has voiced his dislike of the film, saying that it didnt capture the whole story, but he still took part in the promotional tour. In addition to giving a plethora of interviews about his former life in the Mafia, Gotti Jr. has filled his Instagram profile with images of him with celebrities like John Travolta and Kelly Preston (who respectively played his father and mother in the film).Even for a man who left criminal infamy behind, John Gotti Jr., much like his father, still seems to enjoy the spotlight. In that respect, the Gotti legacy certainly lives on.After this look at John Gottis son, John Junior Gotti, discover the secret life of John Connolly, the FBI agent who partnered with mob boss Whitey Bulger. Then, learn how Joey Merlino became the John Gotti of Philadelphia. The post The Tumultuous Life Of John Gotti Jr., The Son Of Infamous Mob Boss John Gotti appeared first on All That's Interesting.

The Chilling Story Of The Jamison Family, From Their Unexplained Disappearance To The Discovery Of Their Bodies Four Years Later
FacebookThe Jamison family: Bobby, Sherilyn, and Madyson.Bobby Jamison, his wife Sherilyn, and their six-year-old daughter, Madyson, seemingly led normal lives in Eufaula, Oklahoma. But on October 8, 2009, the Jamison family disappeared without a trace. A few days later, the discovery of the Jamison familys truck only deepened the mystery. Inside, the Jamisons had left $32,000, an angry letter penned by Sherilyn to her husband, and the familys dog, on the brink of starvation. Even the discovery of their bodies four years later side-by-side, face-down offered no answers. The bodies were so decomposed that investigators could not tell how the Jamison family had died. Today, the disappearance and deaths of the Jamison family stands as one of the strangest cold cases in American history. Heres everything we know about their bizarre disappearance and death. The Disappearance Of The Jamison Family In 2009The story of the Jamison family begins back in 2009. That October, Bobby and Sherilyn had purportedly started thinking of buying a new house. On the day before they disappeared, October 7, they had visited a property up in the isolated Sans Bois Mountains, and spoken with the landowner. But the next day the family vanished without a trace from their Eufaula home. According to CBS News, more than 300 volunteers and dozens of law enforcement officials scoured the surrounding area for the missing family. They didnt find Bobby, Sherilyn, or Madyson, but they did find the familys truck eight days after theyd disappeared. At first it seemed like a break in the case but the truck only deepened the mystery. Latimer County Sheriffs OfficeThe Jamison familys truck was found about a week after they vanished.Inside, investigators found a wallet, a purse, the Jamison familys cell phones, $32,000 in cash, and the family dog, starving but alive. Both the money and the dog raised immediate questions. Both Bobby and Sherilyn were disabled they didnt work and it was unusual for them to be carrying so much cash. Whats more, Sherilyns mother Connie told the Daily Mail that Madyson loved the dog and never went anywhere without her. Ive gone back and forth on this thing, but my latest theory based on how the truck was parked and what was found in the truck I think they were forced to stop and got out of the truck to meet with someone they recognized, Latimer County Sheriff Israel Beauchamp told the Oklahoman. And I think they either left willingly or by force.Indeed, the dog and the money both seemed to suggest that the Jamison family had not meant to leave the truck for long. But they never returned. And no one would know what had happened to them until four years later. The Discovery Of The Jamisons Remains Four Years LaterThe Jamison family disappearance went cold until Nov. 16, 2013. That day, roughly three miles from where the Jamison family truck was found back in 2009, deer hunters stumbled upon the skeletal remains of two adults and one child. The three bodies were lying side-by-side, face down in the dirt. Investigators soon proved that they belonged to the Jamisons.Due to the state of decomposition, the cause of death could not be determined. But law enforcement had made some progress in their investigation in the meantime. They had uncovered security footage from the Jamison family home taken on the night they left. In the video recording, Bobby and Sherilyn Jamison are seen going back and forth between their house and their truck. Bobby and Sherilyn are both unusually thin, and pack the truck in total silence. YouTubeSecurity footage showed the Jamison family packing up their truck in a trancelike state. At one point, Sherilyn places a briefcase in the truck. Though investigators found many of the Jamison familys belongings in the vehicle, the briefcase has never been found (neither has Sherilyns small-caliber handgun). And Beauchamp thinks that the briefcase might be an important clue. I think it might have held a lot of cash, he told the Oklahoman. Investigators also learned that Sherilyn had told her mother that their house was haunted and that Bobby had told his pastor that the couple had seen ghosts. According to the Daily Mail, Bobby had even asked the pastor if he could find special bullets in order to shoot the spirits, and Sherilyn, who was interested in witches, had bought a witchs bible, which investigators found during their investigation in the Jamison family home. So what happened to the Jamison family? There are many theories, but no clear answers. Disturbing Theories About The Jamison Family DeathsOne possibility is that the Jamison family was killed; Sherilyns mother has suggested that the couple were possibly killed by a religious cult.Given the money in their truck, its also possible that their deaths were somehow related to a drug deal gone wrong. Though their loved ones deny that Bobby and Sherilyn did drugs themselves, they did have money troubles, and its possible that they might have gotten involved with selling drugs. FacebookThe Jamison family when Madyson was still a baby.Another hypothesis concerns Bobbys father, Bob Dean Jamison. According to the Oklahoman, Bobby described his father as a very dangerous man [who] thinks he is above the law. He even filed a petition for a protective order against his father, claiming that Bob Dean had threatened to kill him and his family on two occasions. My entire family is severely scared for their lives, Bobby Jamison wrote in his petition. I am in fear at all times. However, Bob Dean was in poor health at the time that the family went missing and he died just two months later. Bobbys brother, Jack, has stated that he does not think that their father was involved, as he was either in a hospital or in a rest home when the Jamison family disappeared. Indeed, some believe that the Jamison family disappearance stemmed from a murder-suicide.Investigators found an 11-page letter in the Jamison family truck from Sherilyn to Bobby in which she lists grievances against him, calling him a hermit. And she had purportedly struggled with her mental health in recent years. However, given the lack of information about the Jamison familys cause of death, its difficult to say who may have killed who.In the end, the Jamison family case seemed to have many leads but none of them led anywhere conclusive. Beauchamp once stated that a lot of investigators would love to have as many leads as we do; the problem is they point in so many different directions. Despite all the mysterious clues and theories, police havent been able to untangle the mystery of the Jamison family deaths. The case remains unsolved to this day. What I truly believe is that they went up there, saw something they shouldnt and were murdered by someone, Connie, Sherilyns mother remarked. Who that was, I just dont know. After reading about the strange disappearance and death of the Jamison family, go inside the bizarre disappearance of Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froom. Then learn the chilling story of of Amy Lynn Bradley, who vanished while on a cruise. The post The Chilling Story Of The Jamison Family, From Their Unexplained Disappearance To The Discovery Of Their Bodies Four Years Later appeared first on All That's Interesting.
