In a world where the smallest and most vulnerable animals are often the easiest to overlook, Caroline and Baby Kitten Rescues work is a powerful reminder that every life is worth the fight. From fragile neonatal kittens to complex medical and special needs cases, Baby Kitten Rescue is rewriting what survivingand thrivingcan look like. Below, Caroline shares how it all began, what the day-to-day reality of this work looks like, and the extraordinary impact of giving the most at-risk kittens a real chance at life.I started Baby Kitten Rescue in 2021. My only foster-fail, Chester, inspired me to focus on the most fragile kittens. Chester came into my care as a 2-week-old orphaned kitten who was extremely sick and almost died. That experience pushed me to learn advanced medical skills so that I could give the most vulnerable kittens the very best chance at survival. I also saw that there was a huge need for rescues and fosters specializing in neonatal, medical, and special needs kitten care. I had seen firsthand how this fragile population can thrive when given the proper care, so I was determined to focus on these kittens.Baby Kitten Rescue specializes in neonatal, critical care, and special needs kitten rescue. We believe these kittens lives matter, and that they are worth the extra time, energy, and expense it takes to help them survive and thrive. We aspire to promote diversity, inclusivity, and compassion, and to show that animals with disabilities can live full, rich, and happy lives.Our goals are to continue taking the most vulnerable kittens in need. We will continue focusing on neonatal, medical, and special needs kittens. And we will continue to advocate for animals with disabilities.Tell us about your biggest accomplishments as an organization. Are there any programs or events that youre especially proud of?Our biggest accomplishments have been providing cutting-edge medical care to kittens that not only saved the kittens lives but also helped advance veterinary medicine by showing that treatments are available and successful! For example, we had a kitten, Milly, with congenital hydrocephalus who had surgery to place a VP shunt and now gets to live a long and healthy life! VP shunt placement is a common surgery in human medicine, but it is still very rare in veterinary medicine. It was also so special how many people reached out, saying they had a VP shunt and felt so connected to and inspired by Milly and her story!!What are the biggest challenges facing your organization? How can our readers help?Donations have slowed significantly over the past year. And our kittens require specialized medical care, so we have had to limit how many kittens we take in to make sure we have the funds necessary for their care. So our biggest need right now is monetary donations and donations from our Amazon & Chewy wishlists, most importantly, food and litter. Interacting with and sharing our content on social media also helps us promote our mission and inspire others to care for these vulnerable kittens and cats! We love it when people reach out to us to tell us that we inspired them to foster or adopt animals with disabilities!How many kittens that go through your rescue get adopted? What happens with those that wont get adopted?Almost all of the kittens who go through Baby Kitten Rescue get adopted! We have even had successful adoptions of kittens and cats with disabilities who need specialized care.However, some cats require lifelong specialized care that others are not willing or able to provide. This program is our promise that these cats will always have access to expert veterinary care, daily rehabilitation, and a safe haven where they are celebrated exactly as they are, for as long as they live. Currently, we have 4 Lifetime Care Cats, 3 of which are paralyzed and incontinent, Rufus, Elphaba, and Glinda, and Milly, who has a VP shunt for hydrocephalus.Do you have any cats of your own? How many, and do they all originate from your work with Baby Kitten Rescue? How did you choose them from the hundreds of kittens you save annually? Or did they choose you? :)I have 2 cats, Chester and Rufus. Chester is my only true foster-fail. He came into my care in 2020 when I was fostering for another rescue, before I started Baby Kitten Rescue. He was only 2 weeks old, with no mama cat, and extremely sick. He almost died, but I stayed up with him 24/7 for days, providing around-the-clock care, and begged him to pull through. I promised him that if he fought through, I would never leave him. And he did! Chester is the reason I started Baby Kitten Rescue!Rufus is a forever foster through Baby Kitten Rescue. He came into my care at just 5 weeks old when someone found him outside, all alone, dragging his back legs. We took him to our neurologist, who discovered that he had suffered a traumatic spinal injury that caused an L6 spinal fracture. This injury caused him to lose function of his hind legs, bladder, and bowels. I did intensive rehabilitation with Rufus for a year to see if he could regain any nerve function, but he did not. However, Rufus does not let his disability stop him from living a full and happy life!! He is the happiest, sweetest, most loving cat. He greets everyone who comes through the door with immediate head bumps, scoots around fast when he gets the zoomies, and gives the best cuddles, complete with biscuits and purrs. Rufus requires daily specialized care to manually express his bladder and bowels, but it is so easy and quick.
