ALLTHATSINTERESTING.COMThe Mysterious Story Of Kenneka Jenkins, The 19-Year-Old Found Dead In A Hotel FreezerThe night of September 8, 2017, was supposed to be fun. Young people descended on the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Rosemont, Illinois, where they danced, listened to music, and took funny videos of each other. But those same videos would soon be the subject of scrutiny both for the police and amateur sleuths online because of what happened next. That night, a 19-year-old partygoer named Kenneka Jenkins disappeared.FacebookKenneka Jenkins was just 19 when she died from hypothermia in a hotel walk-in freezer. The search for Jenkins was heartbreaking but brief. Just two days later, her body was found in a walk-in freezer at the hotel. Investigators soon determined that her death was an accident and that she died of hypothermia after consuming alcohol and epilepsy/migraine medication. But not everyone believes that thats what happened. The Disappearance Of Kenneka JenkinsFacebookThough Kenneka Jenkins mother began searching for her shortly after she went missing, the hotel refused to share surveillance footage until she had filed a missing persons report.Kenneka Jenkins had plenty to celebrate when she left home on September 8, 2017. The 19-year-old had just gotten a new job at a nursing home, according to WGNTV, and headed out to meet friends at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.Videos from the hotel show young people hanging out, drinking, and dancing. Jenkins made sporadic appearances. One video appeared to show her leaving the hotel room. Another appeared to show her reflection in someones sunglasses. Then, Kenneka Jenkins stopped showing up at all.As WGNTV reports, her friends realized around four in the morning that they couldnt find her. They alerted her mother, Teresa Martin, and explained that they had left Jenkins in the hotel hallway to retrieve her phone and car keys from the room. When they returned to the hallway, Jenkins was gone. Martin rushed to the hotel to search for her daughter. But she would find the staff at the Crowne Plaza Hotel less than cooperative. The Heartbreaking End To A Mothers SearchWhen Teresa Martin arrived at the Crown Plaza Hotel around five a.m., she immediately demanded that the staff help locate her daughter. The staff informed her that she could only view surveillance footage once she had filed a police report. But when Martin went to the police, she was told she needed to wait before filing a report in case Kenneka Jenkins turned up. We were begging for help, and no one was helping, Martin told WGNTV.According to The Chicago Tribune, the family waited a few hours and filed a missing persons report that morning. Police then reached out to the hotel and spent the afternoon searching public areas and the ninth floor, where Jenkins had last been seen. Around three or four p.m., they viewed hotel surveillance footage but did not see any sign of the missing girl.At six p.m., Kenneka Jenkins frustrated family began to knock on hotel room doors. The hotel accused them of disturbing the peace and called 911, but the police who arrived on the scene agreed to take a second look at the hotels surveillance footage. A few hours later, they spotted footage of Jenkins from 3:20 a.m. that morning staggering drunk near the front desk. Sadly, this hopeful clue led only to tragedy. Around one a.m. on Sunday morning, police discovered Kenneka Jenkins body in a walk-in freezer. Alyssa Pointer/Chicago Tribune/TNS/Alamy Live NewsTeresa Martin is comforted by her boyfriend shortly after the discovery of Kenneka Jenkins body. The 19-year-old was dead. But the story of her disappearance quickly began to take on a life of its own. What Happened To Kenneka Jenkins?Though police suspected early on that Kenneka Jenkins had died by accident after walking into the freezer, her family wasnt so sure. The freezer door is heavy. So theres no way, Jenkins sister, Leonore Harris, told WGNTV after the discovery of Jenkins body. If theyre saying shes drunk, she dont have no strength. If she had enough strength to open that freezer door, she would have had enough strength to walk straight. Martin agreed. She said that police had told her that Jenkins was so drunk that she couldnt even hold herself up and had to lean on the wall for support. Whats more, the freezer was located in a vacant part of the hotel, an area under construction where most hotel guests wouldnt normally go. So if Kenneka Jenkins hadnt wandered into the freezer by accident, then what happened?I believe someone in this hotel killed my child, Martin told WGNTV.Abaca Press/Alamy Stock PhotoProtesters chant slogans at the entrance to the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Sept. 13, 2017, in protest over the handling of the death investigation of Kenneka Jenkins. As news of Kenneka Jenkins death began to spread online, amateur sleuths began to agree that something sinister had happened to the 19-year-old.As The New York Times reported, people online pored over video footage of Jenkins final party. They identified her in the background of a number of shots and even claimed to find her reflection in the sunglasses of another woman. Some insisted that amidst the babble of party conversation they could even pick out people talking about rape and murder.Theories online ranged from organ harvesting to a $200 hit made by Jenkins friends. Others, though perhaps unconvinced of murder, argued that the police and the hotel staff had failed to prioritize the search for Kenneka Jenkins because she was Black. [N]ot trying to turn this into anything, one wrote on Twitter, but to be honest, had Kenneka Jenkins been white, it would have been breaking news. Kenneka Jenkins mothers own statements echoed that. If they had taken me seriously and checked right away, they could have found my daughter much sooner and she might have been alive, she told the Chicago Tribune. As CBS News reports, Jenkins autopsy soon found that the teenager had died of hypothermia. She had alcohol and topiramate (an epilepsy/migraine medication for which Jenkins did not have a prescription) in her system which would have caused dizziness, impaired memory, impaired concentration, poor coordination, confusion and impaired judgment. The police ruled Kenneka Jenkins death accidental and closed the case. That hasnt stopped some from poring over what happened to her, however, and Jenkins was even featured in an MTV true crime series in 2020.But Teresa Martin believes she knows who is responsible for her daughters death. It wasnt her friends or some sinister serial killer but the hotel staff and the police. To me, I feel like they helped kill my child, she said, the police department and this hotel. After reading about the strange death of Kenneka Jenkins, learn about the death of Elisa Lam, who was discovered in a water tank above the notorious Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles after surveillance footage caught her acting erratically. ALLTHATSINTERESTING.COMThe Secret Life Of John Connolly, The Boston FBI Agent Who Partnered With Whitey BulgerBeginning in the 1970s, Boston FBI agent John Connolly formed an unexpected relationship that would help him bring down numerous high-level criminals over the next 15 years. He teamed up with none other than Whitey Bulger, the leader of the citys Winter Hill Gang, to receive inside information on Bulgers rivals in the Mafia. In exchange, Connolly reportedly protected Bulger for nearly two decades by tipping him off to any investigations against him. This allowed Bulger to successfully build his criminal empire, rising to the top of Bostons Irish Mob.Thomas Landers/The Boston Globe via Getty ImagesFBI agent John Connolly in 1987.Their illicit partnership lasted until at least 1990, when Connolly retired from the FBI. However, it wasnt revealed until 1998. Then, Connolly faced federal charges of racketeering, obstruction of justice, and even murder for his association with Bulger and his role in the death of a Boston businessman. This is the story of John Connolly, the disgraced FBI agent who partnered with one of Bostons most notorious criminals in an attempt to bolster his own career. How John Connolly Became Involved With Mob Boss Whitey BulgerJohn Joseph Connolly Jr. was born in Boston on August 1, 1940. His father worked for Gillette and his mother was a housewife. The family was poor, and Connolly grew up in the Old Harbor Housing Project. Just a few doors down lived the Bulger family.Facebook/Dirty Old BostonThe Old Harbor Housing Project in 1940.According to Boston.com, Connolly was good friends with Billy Bulger, the younger brother of future Mob boss James Whitey Bulger. While Connolly and the elder Bulger didnt cross paths often due to their age difference (Bulger was 11 years Connollys senior), they did know of each other. The Boston Globe reported that Whitey Bulger once chased away eight-year-old Connollys bullies during a fight over a ball. At the time, 19-year-old Bulger was already notorious for leading the Mercer Street Gang.Connollys family moved away from the housing project when he was 12 years old, and he likely didnt see Bulger again until the 1970s. Until then, they led vastly different lives.Wikimedia CommonsOne of Whitey Bulgers earliest mugshots in 1947.Bulger continued to rise through the ranks in Bostons criminal underworld, and he soon moved up from the Mercer Street Gang to the much larger and deadlier Winter Hill Gang. Meanwhile, Connolly attended Boston College, took law school classes, and secured a job as an FBI agent at the Boston field office in 1973. Two years later, he would cross paths with his old neighbor Whitey Bulger once again. The Unexpected Partnership Between An FBI Agent And A Crime BossIn 1975, John Connolly reportedly persuaded Whitey Bulger to become an informant. The deal was simple: Bulger would give Connolly information on rival gang members, and Connolly would protect Bulger from prosecution for his own illegal activities. For more than a decade, the plan worked perfectly. With tips he received from Bulger, according to the Miami New Times, Connolly was able to take down major figures like Gennaro Angiulo, the head of Bostons Italian Mafia. He also helped dismantle the Patriarca crime family. As former FBI agent Joseph D. Pistone wrote in his book The Ceremony: The reign of the Patriarca Family is virtually ended. A substantial amount of the credit for the demise of that mob Family must be given to one man, Special Agent John Connolly.Wikimedia CommonsWhitey Bulger and his crime partner Stephen Flemmi in the 1980s.Bulger benefitted from the deal as much as Connolly did.Getting his enemies off the streets meant less competition when it came to things like trafficking illicit substances. Bulger and his partner in crime, Stephen Flemmi, were able to build up a drug empire that made the Winter Hill Gang one of the most powerful factions of the Boston underworld. With the protection of Connolly, Bulger quite literally got away with murder. In 1990, John Connolly retired after 22 years as an FBI agent. Bulger was dropped as an informant, and by 1995, the FBI had charged him with racketeering and extortion. The symbiotic relationship between the criminal and law enforcement had come to a bitter end and Bulger wasnt the only one who ultimately faced justice.John Connollys Arrest, Trial, And ImprisonmentBy 1998, details about John Connollys secret partnership with Whitey Bulger had started to emerge. He was indicted on his first federal charges the following year, and in 2002, he was convicted of racketeering, obstruction of justice, and lying to an FBI agent. These charges stemmed from Connolly tipping off Bulger and Flemmi before they were charged in 1995, telling them to flee. He then lied to an FBI agent about his involvement. He was convicted in 2002 and sentenced to 10 years in prison.Twitter/@picturebostonJohn Connolly leaving a federal courthouse in Boston in 2002.Connollys most serious charges, however, came from another incident. In 2008, he was convicted of second-degree murder. According to the Boston Herald, Connolly had once leaked information to Bulger that led the mobster to have a man killed. That man was John Callahan, the former president of World Jai Alai. Bulger had previously had another World Jai Alai executive killed, and Callahan had information that could implicate him in the murder. Connolly reportedly leaked this tip to Bulger, causing Bulger to order a hit on Callahan to protect himself.John Connolly was sentenced to an additional 40 years in prison for the crime. He remained behind bars until 2021 when he was granted medical release due to his failing health. Meanwhile, Whitey Bulger died in prison in 2018 while serving a life sentence. As U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan once told The New York Times, John Connolly became a Winter Hill Gang operative masquerading as an FBI agent. After reading about disgraced FBI agent John Connolly and his secret partnership with Mob boss Whitey Bulger, learn about Freddy Geas, the inmate who murdered Bulger in prison. Then, go inside the true story of John Douglas, the FBI agent who profiled historys most notorious serial killers. The post The Secret Life Of John Connolly, The Boston FBI Agent Who Partnered With Whitey Bulger appeared first on All That's Interesting.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 0 Views -
