Vaseline for Cat Hairballs? What Vets Want You to Know First
Youre watching your cat hack up yet another hairball on your carpet when someone suggests Vaseline. Wait, what? That stuff sitting in your bathroom cabinet? It sounds bizarre, maybe even dangerous, but people swear by it for treating hairballs. So whats the actual truth here? Is Vaseline safe for cats, or are you about to accidentally poison your pet with petroleum jelly? The short answer is that Vaseline isnt toxic to cats in small amounts and has actually been used to treat hairballs for years. But before you start slathering it on your cat or mixing it into their food, there are some real risks you need to understand. The difference between helpful and harmful comes down to how much your cat ingests and whether they have any underlying health issues.Lets dig into what Vaseline actually is, how it works for cats, and when it becomes dangerous. What Vaseline Actually IsVaseline is petroleum jelly, also called petrolatum, made from a mixture of waxes and mineral oils.People use Vaseline for everything. It heals minor burns and cuts, moisturizes dry skin, prevents diaper rash, removes eye makeup, adds shine to hair, lubricates squeaky doors, and even moisturizes pet paw pads. Its one of those products that seems to have endless applications. But just because its useful doesnt automatically mean its safe for your cat to consume.Image Credit: Anna Gawlik, ShutterstockThe Petroleum ConnectionKnowing that Vaseline comes from petroleum might make you nervous. After all, petroleum products include gasoline and crude oil, neither of which youd want anywhere near your cat. But heres the important distinction: the petroleum found in petroleum jelly is safe for both humans and pets because its been triple-purified to remove any cancer-causing substances.Vaseline acts as an occlusive substance, meaning it forms a protective layer on the skins surface without being absorbed. Your cats skin wont absorb it, and neither will their digestive tract. Instead, the petroleum jelly forms a coating along the digestive system and on hairballs, which is actually how it helps move them through. So putting Vaseline on your cats paw pads or skin is safe, and small amounts ingested wont poison them. The key phrase here is small amounts.Understanding HairballsIf you own a cat, hairballs are probably an unwelcome but familiar part of life. They tend to show up more frequently in spring and fall when cats shed heavily and swallow more fur during grooming. Some households deal with them year-round.Most of the fur your cat ingests passes through their digestive system without issue and comes out in their feces. Hairballs form when the digestive system cant properly move the ingested hair out of the stomach and intestines. The problem is usually motility, meaning the movement of hair through the digestive tract gets disrupted.Certain illnesses can slow down digestion and contribute to hairball formation. Hyperthyroidism, inflammatory bowel disease, gastroenteritis, and other gastrointestinal problems can all make hairballs worse or more frequent.Image Credit: RJ22, ShutterstockHow Vaseline Helps With HairballsMost cats vomit up hairballs occasionally, which is completely normal. But there are supplements designed to help prevent them, and most of these contain petroleum jelly mixed with flavoring to make them more appealing to cats. They work by helping move hair through the digestive system more efficiently. Some veterinarians recommend these petroleum jelly supplements for cats with recurring hairball issues. If youre thinking about using plain Vaseline instead of a commercial product, talk to your vet first. They can determine whether its the best option for your specific cat and situation. The Real Risks of VaselineWhile Vaseline can effectively treat hairballs and even constipation, there are legitimate dangers you need to know about before giving it to your cat.Aspiration PneumoniaVaseline is made with mineral oil, which is extremely harmful if cats inhale it. If your cat breathes in petroleum jelly, it can enter their lungs and cause aspiration pneumonia and potentially fatal lung toxicity. The chances of this happening arent huge, but theyre real enough that you should keep Vaseline away from your cats face, especially around their nose, where inhalation becomes more likely. Never force your cat to eat Vaseline. Forcing it increases the risk that theyll accidentally inhale it, and thats when serious lung damage becomes a genuine threat.Dehydration and Nutrient DeficiencyHeres the irony: the same property that helps Vaseline move hairballs through the digestive system can also prevent your cats body from absorbing water and nutrients properly. Over time, this can cause stomach issues like diarrhea and dehydration. The lack of proper nutrient absorption can eventually lead to more serious health complications.A healthy cat can handle small amounts of Vaseline without problems. But if your cat already has underlying health issues and regularly consumes petroleum jelly, you could be making things worse instead of better.Image Credit: Pressmaster, ShutterstockTalk to Your Vet FirstBefore you reach for that jar of Vaseline as a home remedy, call your veterinarian. Your cats hairball problem might actually be a symptom of an underlying health issue that needs professional diagnosis and treatment. The last thing you want is to create additional health problems while trying to solve one on your own.Your vet can determine whether Vaseline is appropriate for your cats specific situation or if theres a better, safer alternative. They can also rule out medical conditions that might be causing excessive hairballs in the first place. The Bottom LineVaseline can provide real benefits for cats, including helping with stubborn hairballs. But petroleum jelly also carries risks, particularly if your cat inhales it accidentally or consumes too much over time. Small amounts are generally safe for healthy cats, but that doesnt mean you should start using it without veterinary guidance.Your cats health and safety matter too much to rely on bathroom cabinet remedies without professional input. Talk to your vet before giving your cat Vaseline, and make sure its truly the best option for their situation. Sometimes the simple solution is the right one, but sometimes its just simple.Did You Know? Our brand-new posts are rounded up and included in our weekly emails. Heroes of the Pet World: The Odd Cat Sanctuary
What Are The Odds? One of the most frequently asked questions we get at The Odd Cat Sanctuary is What is an odd cat? To answer that, we have to go back to the beginning and talk about why our founder, Tara Kawczynski, decided to start The Odd Cat Sanctuary in 2015.A veterinary technician with a lifelong passion for rescuing animals, Tara noticed that cats that werent considered perfect were less likely to be rescued and adopted. Cats with medical needs, physical differences, behavioral challenges, or simply unconventional appearance were being overlooked. She knew her purpose was to start a rescue that would not only highlight these special cats, but also show the world that different doesnt mean youre not worthy of love.Being an Odd Cat doesnt mean broken or unlovable or less deserving. It simply means different. And different is okay. Over the years, Odd Cat has adopted out cats with missing limbs, missing eyes, blind cats, incontinent cats, semi-feral cats, feral cats, senior cats, and even cats that might just look a little different. These cats arent broken. They dont need to be fixed. They need understanding, patience, and the chance to be seen for who they are. When we change how we define an adoptable cat, so many more lives can be saved.Shifting PerspectiveWhen I first started fostering for The Odd Cat Sanctuary, my second foster was a Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH) cat named Phoebe. CH is a neurological disorder causing balance issues, uncoordinated movement, and wobbling. While it may look troubling to those who arent familiar with it, CH is not painful, and it is non-progressive. Cats with CH can live long, happy, and healthy lives. When Phoebe first arrived at my house, I didnt know much about CH. I couldnt help but feel sorry for her. She had the cutest stomps when she walked, but after a few steps, she would often fall over. I found myself wondering if this is a good life for her. I shared how I was feeling with Tara, and what she said to me changed everything. She told me to look at what she can do, not what she cant. So I shifted my perspective. Yes, Phoebe falls, but you know what she does next? She gets back up. She plays. She loves to eat. She uses her claws to climb up whatever she wants. She snuggles. She purrs. And she loves her life. Phoebe doesnt know shes any different, so I dont treat her that way. There are some accommodations she needs, but wouldnt you make accommodations for anyone you love? This is all we want for all of our Odd Cats. They all deserve it. I foster failed Phoebe, and she continues to amaze me every single day.ChallengesOne of the biggest challenges we are facing is finding foster homes. We are asked daily to take in cats who desperately need help, but without available fosters, we just cant say yes as much as we want to. Finding foster homes can be difficult for any rescue, but its especially difficult to find fosters for cats with special needs. Many people worry they wont have the experience or knowledge to foster a special needs cat, but most of what these cats need can be taught and supported. All it truly takes is compassion, patience, and a willingness to try. What weve learned is that once people take the first step and foster a special needs cat, they often realize how rewarding it can be. They just need to take that chance. These cats may require some extra care, but trust us, they give back so much more than they take.Get InvolvedThere are many ways you can help The Odd Cat Sanctuary and your local rescues. Even if you cant foster, you can transport cats, help process applications, assist with TNR, donate, or share social media posts. Sharing our posts and spreading the word about our mission helps these cats get seen and understood. Even actions that seem small can make a huge difference. Our hope is that we inspire people everywhere to see perfection in all cats. We truly believe there is a match for every cat out there, even the ones who are odd.Follow us on Instagram and Facebook, and visit our website here.

Paws on Parchment Proof That Cats Have Been Helping Writers for Centuries
Rarely does a day go by when were not entertained by a meme, image, or the actual, real-life presence of a cat that seems to wholeheartedly believe that whatever mischief their allocated human is up to could only be improved upon through feline collaboration. Whether theyre helping to make the bed, offering their skills as taste-testers in the kitchen, or casually draping themselves across our books and keyboard in the office, cats like to be part of the action. You might think that the feline predilection for invading human space, hobbies, and workplaces is a recent reflection of how their roles have evolved from that of outdoor rodent controller to highly regarded family member, however, a recent exhibition at The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore MD shows us that cats have been leaving their mark, both figuratively and literally, in places of great importance, for centuries. Some curious visitors stopped by from the local animal rescue! The first of several animal-themed exhibits to open at the Walters over the coming year, Paws on Parchment is a tribute to the way in which cats have become inextricably bound to the lives of humans over the years. The domestication of the cat evolved out of mutual appreciation; we for their ability to keep populations of disease-spreading vermin under control, and they for our ability to provide heating and warmth. For many years, this relationship was largely unchanged, with the exception of cultures that were enlightened enough to revere these magnificent creatures as superior beings and gods. Whilst cats were undoubtedly loved and cherished throughout the ages, the cultural evolution of humans combined with the improvement in hygiene and parasite prevention has seen them take up a priority position in households worldwide, with thousands, if not millions, of websites, fan clubs, associations, and publications devoted entirely to the celebration of all things feline.Cat drawingsThe Paws on Parchment exhibit showcases how the antics of cats were being memorialized and honored in the margins of medieval manuscripts, with works that tell us how medieval people thought about, interacted with, and admired cats. Long before there were memes and cheezburgers, people were sharing stories and images of their feline friends, and the appearance of pawprints across a 15th century Flemish manuscript tells us that the quintessential keyboard cat has been around much longer than the keyboards themselves!Cats filled many important roles in the medieval era, said Lynley Anne Herbert, Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts. Like today, some cats were considered beloved pets whose behavior amused and exasperated their owners. However, felines also served an important function as hunters that protected valuable books and textiles, food stores, and even people from disease-carrying rodents and other vermin. Cats could also carry symbolic and moral meaning in this period, which is reflected in the manuscripts we will have on view. The Paws on Parchment exhibit is open now and will be coming to a close on February 22nd, 2026. Admission to the museum is free. Our fascination with felines is not a recent one!VISITOR INFORMATIONThe Walters Art Museum is located at 600 N. Charles St., north of Baltimores Inner Harbor.
