Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot plans to push multiplayer in future Far Cry games
When you think of Far Cry, you don't necessarily think multiplayer. You might think bombastic set pieces or awe-inspiring global adventures. That's not to say the series hasn't flirted with it before - Far Cry 5 and 6 both had online co-op campaigns, and some games even had PvP modes, although I don't know anyone who played them and this was scrapped for the latest entry. Despite the fact that the series is known for its thrilling campaigns, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has said that the company will push the multiplayer aspects of future games to the fore.
Speaking at the New Global Sport Conference in Saudi Arabia, Guillemot said that Ubisoft's goal for Far Cry is "really to bring the multiplayer aspects more predominantly pushed, so that it can also be played for a long time by players."
As a series known for being the best open-world games, this seems like a strange direction to take, but we know that many studios and executives are still pushing towards live-service elements in their triple-A games, despite many high-profile flops recently (Ubisoft's XDefiant being one of them).
Far Cry multiplayer could take the form of another co-operative campaign, but Guillemot's insistence that the developer wants to "predominately push" multiplayer suggests something bigger. Perhaps PvP could return, or we could see Far Cry 7's sandbox world open up into some kind of strand game where players leave hints or helpful items for one another on their journeys.
It's too early to pass judgment on how multiplayer elements will impact the next Far Cry game, seeing as we don't even know what form those elements will take. However, the news might make fans of the series slightly nervous, as it eschews what the games have traditionally been known for.

It's probably too early to put Far Cry 7 on our list of upcoming PC games, seeing as we don't even have a release year announced yet, but there's plenty of other bangers to look forward to in the meantime.
