New market research suggests that AMD is in big trouble when it comes to its Radeon gaming GPUs, with its market share halving in the past year. This comes off the back of AMD releasing its RDNA 4 GPUs that delivered stellar performance for their MSRPs but proved difficult to find at uninflated prices post-launch.

This market share information comes from PC data analyst Jon Peddie Research (JPR) and suggests that AMD has dropped from a 12% share of the market last year and 8% last quarter, to just 6% market share right now. Effectively the entire rest of the market is held by Nvidia, with it holding 94% and Intel nowhere to be seen. While we've been mightily impressed with AMD's new GPU offerings, specifically the Radeon RX 9070 XT - it remains the top choice overall for most gamers on our best graphics card guide - it has not been enough to stop the Nvidia domination.

It's worth noting that these numbers are the AIB (add-in-board) sales figures, meaning Nvidia's Founders Edition (FE) cards are not factored into the data; it's only those produced by the likes of Asus, Gigabyte, Palit, PNY, and more. With Nvidia's FE sales added to the equation, we would expect its share to grow even more.

Seemingly, one of the biggest issues causing this drop is the previously mentioned inability of AMD to have its cards be widely available at normal prices. For instance, the RX 9070 XT MSRP is $599, but most stores in the US are pricing these cards at $700-$750. Likewise, the RX 9060 XT 16GB was supposed to be $349 but is generally $389 or more. In contrast, Nvidia's competing RTX 5070 and RTX 5060 cards are largely available at or close to their MSRPs.

Given AMD still trails Nvidia when it comes to the advancement of its DLSS upscaling and frame generation tech, as well as the ray tracing performance of its GPUs, AMD's cards need to be offering much better value than Nvidia's options to snatch back significant market share. With prices so inflated and availability so low, that's seemingly not happening.

This could be why we're seeing reports of AMD moving quickly to develop its RDNA 5 architecture. If it can get that out the gate ahead of Nvidia's next architecture, it could finally find itself with a performance advantage that lasts long enough to truly compel gamers to switch to its wares. One such possible future card could be the Radeon RX 10090 XT, rumors of which we've seen swirling around for some months.

We don't expect the rumor mill to slow down any time soon, and it will be interesting to see how AMD handles returning to the high-end GPU market after effectively sitting out one generation, especially now that it has considerable ground to try and regain.

AMD is having a much better time in the processor space, with many of its Ryzen products sitting on our best gaming CPU buying guide. That and its success in the server market is ensuring the company is still making plenty of money, but it will no doubt want its GPU division to finally start pulling its financial weight.

Do you think AMD can turn around this huge deficit and return to where they were in 2024, or is Nvidia's pull just too strong? Let us know your thoughts over on our community Discord server.
