Love Minecraft and Portal? Then you'll be in seventh heaven with Portal: Java Edition, which blends the two together, recreating the weird, wonderful world of Portal within Minecraft. It's taken five years for developer Bampinsos Entertainment to bring this project to fruition, and we can't begin to imagine the sheer amount of work that's gone into making it happen. But, featuring fifty full levels and a level editor, it's finally complete and ready to delight Minecraft and Portal fans alike. Even better, providing you own Minecraft: Java Edition, it's absolutely free to play.
There's so much love out there for Portal. Even though it's been 14 years since Portal 2 was released, its world, including testing-obsessed robot GLaDOS, has never gone away. From cosplay to fan-mods, this portal-flinging puzzler lives on and now you can play it inside crafting game Minecraft.
Portal: Java Edition features an amazing fifty levels of blocky Portal action. This isn't just some skin-pack, either; it boasts many of Portal and Portal 2's gameplay mechanics including buttons, cubes, light bridges, transport tunnels and, of course, portals.
Fans have let out a collective 'Squeeeee!' over this amazing mash-up, which has been in development for five years. "I've shown how I play this to my friend, he was super confused. Then I revealed to him that this is Minecraft and he was screaming for 5 minutes straight," reads one YouTube comment.
"This is officially the coolest datapack I have ever seen in my entire life," reads another. Astonishingly enough, Portal: Java Edition has indeed been created using datapacks and resourcepacks. It doesn't require any mods, the base game is enough.
And when you're done with Portal: Java Edition's fifty levels, you can make your own. You read that right, there's a fully featured map editor included. Whatever's next for Bampinsos Entertainment, we hope the team sticks together. Maybe they can take a leaf out of the Fallout London team's book and form their own indie studio.
Portal: Java Edition is available for free from the project's website. You can download it here. Who knows, maybe this'll put Portal back on Valve's radar, and it'll knuckle down and give us a Portal 3. Well, after it's finished with Half-Life 3, that is.
