“Overpronation” is not a word I had heard before, so I asked my physical therapist to repeat it. “Come again?” I said, and he clarified, “You have foot pronation, or overpronation, on your left foot.” He explained that it’s a very common foot problem in which the foot rolls inward, causing a misalignment in the lower body. It can cause pain in the feet, knees, hips, and lower back, so finding the best shoes for pronation is critical to alleviating said pain. Is this why I’m always dealing with back pain and tight hips? Was it my foot’s fault?
Thankfully, my physical therapist had a sneaker recommendation to help me correct my foot pronation. Brooks is his favorite brand—he wears them to work everyday—and his No. 1 choice, the Brooks Ghost Max 2 Running and Walking Shoe, is now finally on sale. When paired with the right insole, I could look forward to comfortable, all-day wear and less chronic back, foot, knee, and foot pain. Sign me up!
Brooks Ghost Max 2 Running and Walking Shoe
Brooks
One of Brooks’ more popular styles, the Ghost Max 2 tends to sell out quickly. Right now, the Coconut Milk, Zephyr, and gray sneakers as well as the all-black colorway are still in stock at both Brooks and Zappos. The former is actually my favorite color combination because the subtle pop of pink adds an unexpected splash of color.
Beyond the aesthetics of this in-demand shoe, it’s the supportive design that is most appealing to me (and to anyone else struggling with foot pronation). It may be made with runners in mind, but the soft, lightweight cushioning encourages a neutral foot position to help you move from landing to toe. And its wide base adds stability as does extra sidewall support.
This sneaker is best for people with mild to moderate foot pronation—like me—and with the pairing of a soft and well-cushioned insert, can gently redirect feet into a neutral position, relieving the pain associated with overpronation. Thanks to my PT’s expert recommendation, the Brooks Ghost Max 2 Running and Walking Shoe is my new go-to sneaker for extra-long walks with the dog, traveling, and overall daily wear. If you also struggle with foot pronation, grab this pair on sale at Brooks for $110.
