Nostalgia Gardening Turns Your Yard into a Memory-Filled Escape—and These Expert Tips Make It So Easy

The garden is one of the best places to form memories. Whether it's pulling weeds, the first veggie patch you ever planted, or the smell of fresh flowers in springtime, there are endless opportunities for fond (and occasionally frustrating) moments in your garden.

The rise of nostalgia gardening is all about resurfacing memories every time you step outside. This practice involves familiar scents, planting flowers that evoke memories of a loved one, or incorporating vintage elements, such as old gardening tools.

If you want your garden to reignite your inner child, use these tips to create a nostalgic garden.

Gail Pabst is the marketing director of the National Gardening Bureau.

Choosing Nostalgic Plants

Nostalgia gardening draws on your memories to create a garden filled with sights and smells that remind you of cherished moments. Because of this, plants that generate a feeling of nostalgia will be different for everyone.

However, there are still a few common elements of nostalgia gardens that can serve as a great starting point. Gail Pabst of the National Gardening Bureau offered a few plant recommendations.

Roses

“Roses are undoubtedly strong contenders for evoking sweet memories,” she says.

And though the inspiration for your garden might stretch back a few decades, that doesn’t mean you have to stick to the same varieties planted years ago. Modern cultivars can offer the same nostalgic feeling with improved traits, such as enhanced resistance to pests and diseases.

“While older varieties were often plagued by issues like disease, pests, and demanding maintenance through deadheading and pruning, modern breeding has thankfully addressed many of these challenges. Today, gardeners can find roses with improved disease resistance, continuous blooms that don't require deadheading, compact forms ideal for smaller spaces, all while retaining that classic, beloved fragrance,” Pabst says.

Heirloom Seeds

Another, more literal way to create nostalgia with your plant choices is by using heirloom seeds. These plants have been cultivated and preserved for decades, and in some cases, even centuries. You might be able to find the exact variety of tomatoes your grandmother grew in her garden, or you can stretch back even further and choose plants grown by historical figures.

Heirloom seeds are available for vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowering annuals, and perennials, among other plants, and they’ve often been saved for their unique colors, outstanding flavors, or exceptional hardiness, making them a great addition to your garden.

Using Scents to Evoke Nostalgia

Scent is one of the most powerful tools for bringing back memories, and your garden is the perfect place to add sweet, nostalgic aromas.

Lilacs

“Lilacs are another plant deeply tied to nostalgia,” Pabst says. “Their iconic fragrance is widely cherished.”

Although lilacs tend to thrive in colder climates and can be too large to be practical for some gardens, modern advancements have made them available to a broader variety of gardeners.

“Fortunately, contemporary breeding has introduced numerous new cultivars that offer resistance to powdery mildew, are adapted for warmer Southern climates, and come in compact sizes suitable for smaller gardens, making this nostalgic scent accessible to more gardeners,” Pabst says.

Lavender

Lavender is another plant that offers both beautiful blooms and a powerful fragrance.

“Lavenders also hold a special place in the nostalgic garden, largely due to their distinctive and soothing fragrance,” Pabst says. “While traditionally seen as somewhat fussy due to their preference for Mediterranean-like conditions (struggling with cold and humidity), newer varieties have been developed to overcome many of these limitations.”

Alternatives

Other plants with fragrances that might help create nostalgia include sweet peas, peonies, lilies, and jasmine. Consider nostalgia through the seasons as well. In spring, you might want a variety of tulips and hyacinths to remind you of the plants your relatives used to grow, while in summer, you may wish for juicy tomato plants or zucchini reminiscent of backyard cookouts.

Other Garden Elements That Add Nostalgia

You can also give your garden a more nostalgic or vintage feel with decorative elements. If you’re lucky enough to have garden tools handed down through generations, or a few planters inherited from your grandparents, incorporating them into the landscape will easily add nostalgia.

“Avoid shiny, modern finishes,” Pabst says. Instead, choose pots and planters made of terra-cotta, which will age more naturally. Select decorative garden elements, such as bird baths or stepping stones, with natural finishes, and avoid any overly vibrant colors. And if you have the space, you could add a larger element, such as a gazebo or pergola, to achieve a whimsical, children's novel aesthetic.

Nostalgia gardening doesn’t have to be overly complicated; start by thinking of what your favorite plants and scents were as a child, then look for modern equivalents. If you live near your childhood home, or if your parents still have the same house, you can even get a head start by transplanting a few favorites to create your garden.
