After pouring hours into gaining materials and fighting off hordes of enemies, I finally felt comfortable enough to tackle anything Arrakis threw my way in Dune Awakening. What I didn't account for was my lack of a Sandbike, and as I walked across the endlessness of the desert, a rumbling underneath sent the Sandworms straight to me, eating me and all my hard work in one big gulp. It's a brutal, challenging, and yet serious fun take on the franchise, and it's even better if you can grab it for just $5 / £5.
Like the best survival games, Dune Awakening sees you go from being an empty-handed and overwhelmed survivor to the leader of your own base, a big jump from being powerless to powerful. However, there are tens of hours of being a basic down-on-their-luck character first, and all of that progress can be lost to an unlucky encounter with Shai-Hulud.
While one of the game's biggest appeals is its variety of tools drawn from the Dune franchise, you're stuck on Arrakis' dangerous deserts, whatever you do. Rocky 'islands' keep you safe from those pesky sandworms, but they're still full of other enemies to encounter. However, traversing the plains between each formation is where things become terrifying, and in all honesty, it rivals the best horror games, as the anxiety of losing your hard-earned gear is truly scary.
Even if you're not a huge fan of space games or the Dune series as a whole, it's a refreshing take on the survival genre. You're not given the ability to choose difficulties or play in a 'creative' mode to wreak havoc (although I hope the latter gets added in a future update). Instead, you and a bunch of other players in the MMO game are battling it out for limited resources, and the Deep Desert is where PvP truly comes to life, with endgame materials that will outfit you in the most powerful gear in the game.
If that sounds exciting, you have the chance to grab Dune Awakening and two other games for just $4.99 / £4.99 with Fanatical, thanks to the VIP Mystery Bundle. Admittedly, you only have a small chance of getting Dune Awakening, but if you do, you're essentially getting it for less than $5 / £5. Even if it's not one of the ones you get, you'll still grab three of the best PC games, as all games in the bundle are rated 'Very Positive' to 'Overwhelmingly Positive', and hold a value of $20 SSRP at least.
Dune Awakening isn't the only triple-A game in the bundle either, as you also have the chance to score some of the best RPGs, as well as one upcoming PC game. Here's the full list below:
- Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater Deluxe Edition
- Killing Floor 3 Elite Nightfall Edition
- Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Deluxe Edition
- Stellar Blade Complete Edition
