Drew and Jonathan Scott’s New HGTV Show Is Their Biggest Passion Project Yet—Here’s Why It’s a Must-Watch

Drew and Jonathan Scott are getting back in the saddle with their new HGTV show, Chasing the West. The duo, famously known as the Property Brothers, is no stranger to helping families find their forever homes. But in their latest adventure, the Scotts add a more personal touch. Filmed in the American West, the show focuses on helping families who are relocating from the city find their ideal homes on ranches.

What makes their new show, which premieres on July 30, so special is that not only are the families getting a taste of home, but the brothers are, too. After growing up on a horse ranch near the Rocky Mountains, the Scotts have lots of ranch knowledge, advice, and funny stories to share with families.

The brothers chatted with BHG about their new show and shared why viewers should be excited about this new project. From the pros and cons of living on the ranch to takes on living in the countryside, here's all there is to know before binging the show.

Q: How is this show different than the shows you've done in the past?

Drew: This isn't a show that's all about a deep dive into the renovation. This is a show about helping people make the right decision when they're completely changing their lifestyle. Social media is how we connect with our fans, and they're writing to us every week about the stress of the city, the high pace, and the cost, which they can't afford. They want something new, and they've dreamed of living in the country, but then they're entirely unaware of what that entails. They think it's just relaxing and looking at the mountains, when it's actually a lot of work. We're there to help with understanding that.

Jonathan: And not only do you get these gorgeous scenic shots and see these beautiful properties, but you also see the calamity of people diving in. We had one homeowner who said all she'd dreamt of for decades was having a chicken farm. She wanted chickens, to eat her own eggs, to do all those things. We took her to a chicken farm and dropped her into a chicken pen, only to discover she was terrified of chickens. So these are the sorts of things that make for good TV.

Q: Why is Chasing the West so special to you both?

Jonathan: It was really a throwback to how we were raised. We were raised by the cowboy code—that's what my dad used to say. There are all these rules about how you take care of family, how you take care of the land, and the animals. It was pretty nostalgic. It makes me miss all those memories of singing around a campfire with my dad, playing the guitar, and watching the sunset, and it's just the most beautiful country in the world.

Even if they [the viewers] don't plan on abandoning the city and moving to the country today, they will be able to take something away from this show that will help them either find inspiration at home or maybe change their plans and realize their priorities. For us, our priority is our kids and trying to make sure that we're providing what they need. Nothing's better than a childhood on a ranch.

Drew: Yeah, it's scenic and beautiful. This show is educational and entertaining. like, super entertaining.

Q: Would you ever move back to a ranch?

Drew: Absolutely. I would love to. In fact, a couple of years ago, Linda and I started looking at ranch properties outside of Los Angeles, but my wife really wanted to have a large acreage, and I was trying to tell her how much work it is, and she didn't get it. So we went looking at the properties. Then she started to understand, plus, she's allergic to everything, right? Whether it's horses, trees, or oak, she's allergic. So I think we'll wait a couple of years. Is there such a thing as hypoallergenic ranches? There must be.

Jonathan: We're fortunate that, even though we live in the city (Los Angeles), Zooey and I have an acreage, and so we have a little space. A little nature makes us feel better, but nothing is like being on a true ranch. Growing up, we had 160 acres and 30 head of horses, and so you could slap a saddle on and go ride for hours and hours, days and days, because we were backed into the edge of the Rocky Mountains.

Drew: Yeah, it was amazing. And there's something with filming and getting back on the horse. I haven't been in a saddle for years, and really, it was a lot of fun.

Q: What are the pros and cons of living on a ranch?

Jonathan: Let's do the pros first. Pros: the beauty, the serenity. You can actually see the stars at night because in the city, with all the bright lights and the pollution, sometimes you can't see them.

Drew: You don't hear airplanes, cars, and noises. There's nothing when you close your eyes and you listen. All you hear is the wind whistling or the birds singing. I love that.

Jonathan: Cons: shoveling horse poop, picking rocks. You have to be up really, really early to do all the chores. If an animal is sick, you can't wait for the vet. You have to jump in and help out.

Drew: There's always something. Do you want to get in there and calve some cows? Because that's part of the life too, depending on what kind of ranch you want to have. But again, it's hard work. It made us who we are.

Q: What can viewers expect from the new show?

Drew: Well, we're already hearing from fans that they're surprised we grew up on a ranch, and they're surprised how well we ride a horse and stuff like that. That was just our life growing up.

Jonathan: I guarantee you a lot of our audience is going to watch this show, and think, "I never thought about moving to the country, but now I want to move to the country." So you'll see that for sure. And even within the show, it surprised me how often people were intoxicated by the idea of having more land or a lake on the property. And then, in our opinion, sometimes they picked the wrong property. We show them multiple properties, but they would get so fixated on one thing that they would choose that. You should always think about the big picture, the long-term view, and what will make your family happy for the long term. That's the property that you should go with.

Drew: Every family's lifestyle is different, and what's important to one is not what's important to another. If you've ever watched HGTV, have you ever yelled at the screen like, "What are you thinking, homeowners?" You're gonna have many of those moments watching these homeowners figure out the right path.
