We all know the pain of untangling your headphones. It's like some ludicrous puzzle that we're forced solve every darn day. It’s the curse of owning wired headphones.

Perhaps that’s why the top audio brands have largely ditched the classic headphone jack and moved towards almost exclusive wireless listening. Well, that and the ever-evolving technology. Unsurprisingly, wireless earbuds have risen in popularity and become a must-have tech item for busy and active lifestyles.

And lifestyle is absolutely the word. Because headphones and earbuds are a lifestyle choice — there's a pair out there to suit everyone and every lifestyle. Which is great for variety but that can make it harder to choose the right pair for you. We've made it a little easier by doing the research and rounding up the very best wireless earbuds.

What are wireless earbuds?

Just like a pair of standard wired buds, these little guys fit snugly inside your ear's concha (that's the shell-shaped cavity right next to the entrance of your ear canal) and send digital audio signals through a wireless connection.

What is true wireless?

True wireless is a term you’ll come across a lot when researching and shopping for earbuds. Technically, earbuds fall into several categories. For instance, “wireless” earbuds connect to each other via a cord, while “true wireless” have no cord whatsoever — they are completely independent of each other and your device. True wireless headphones can use different types of wireless technology to transmit the sound into your ears. The most common form is Bluetooth.

With brands and listeners favouring true wireless, we’ve followed suit — all the earbuds in this roundup are true wireless.

Are earbuds better than headphones?

If portability and a lower price point appeals to you, you'll probably prefer wireless earbuds over the on-ear counterpart (wireless headphones). And luckily for you, Apple is no longer the only major brand cranking them out. From Bose to Beats, almost every audio brand has got a couple of wireless earbud offerings on the market nowadays.

Headphones are generally considered the go-to option for serious audiophiles. But there are earbuds geared towards high-quality sound that can match up to over-ear headphones at the same price point. Wireless sound quality is affected by factors such as distance and obstructions between your headphones and device, and the codec software that your headphones support.

What are Bluetooth codecs?

Codecs are algorithms that encode and decode digital audio signals. Look out for earbuds with low latency (this is the time it takes for the sound to hit your ears) and support for Qaulcomm’s aptX codecs. These are the best, most up-to-date codecs — particularly for streaming video content and keeping the image and audio in sync. This is important if you’re a Netflix nerd or have a passion for Prime.

What is noise cancellation?

Noise cancellation is another important feature in tech-savvy headphones. There are two kinds of noise cancellation — passive and active noise cancelling. Passive noise cancellation is achieved by the design of the headphones, which may physically block out noise. Active noise cancellation (ANC) uses a system of small microphones which pick up external sounds and create anti-noise sound waves to cancel them out.

Earbuds tend to offer some level of passive noise cancellation because of their in-ear design. But some also have specific ANC modes, such as "transparency mode" which allow select ambient sounds to seep in. A transparency mode is especially useful when listening out for announcements at the train station or talking to colleagues — all without having to stop your music every 30 seconds.

What is spatial audio?

This is an increasingly common feature in up-to-date headphones and earbuds. This technology places sound in different locations around you for a truly immersive, three-dimensional listening experience. If you're watching a movie, for instance, the placement of different sounds can put you right in the middle of the action. Some earbuds also have spatial audio head tracking, which anticipates your head movements and adjusts the spatial audio for optimum audio at all times. Most audio brands have their own version of spatial audio. The best known version is Dolby Atmos.

What are the best wireless earbuds?

All of these options can make for a tricky decision when it comes to finding the right pair of wireless earbuds in terms of fit, style, and intended use. That's why we've done the research to bring you the best wireless earbuds featuring the latest Bluetooth technology. There should be something for everyone at every budget on this list, including popular models from top brands. All you need to do is pick a pair.

These are the best wireless earbuds in 2025.

Sony WF-1000XM5 earbuds

The Good & The Bad

  • Premium, upgraded tech
  • Excellent Sony sound
  • Clear voice calls
  • Very smart app
  • Fast multipoint pairing
  • A touch wobbly in the ears
  • Top brand, top price

Why We Like It

Without going down the specialist audiophile route, the Sony WF-1000XM5 are the best earbuds around right now. They’re not cheap but they're worth the cash for hi-def sound, cool features, and best-in-class noise cancellation.

There’s lots of Sony technology inside these little buds, including a new amplifier and processor chip, plus audio tech — DSEE Extreme, Edge-AI, and Sony’s LDAC codec. They also added multipoint pairing (missing on the last iteration). Adaptive Sound allows you to control the ambient sounds you let in, while Speak-to-Chat pauses the music whenever you start a conversation.

These are smaller than the previous-gen Sony buds, and some listeners might find them a tricky fit. But we're nit-picking, really. Overall, they're magnificent and pleasingly easy to use. Just tap the buds for volume and playback controls.

The sound comes via mini 8.4mm dynamic drivers for a listening experience both big and nuanced — better than most tech-heavy buds. They also boast Sony's spatial audio technology, 360 Reality Audio. No earbuds are perfect of course. More battery life would always be nice. But these are the buds to beat.

Apple AirPods Pro earbuds

The Good & The Bad

  • Syncs with Apple devices
  • Very comfortable
  • Sweat and water resistant
  • Great sound quality
  • Easy and stable pairing
  • Battery takes a hit with ANC
  • Not as good for non-Apple users

Why We Like It

If you’re an Apple user, it’s time to upgrade with the brand’s best earbud tech: The AirPods Pro 2. They're the latest evolution in the Apple listening experience, with a powerful sound and fantastic noise cancellation.

The noise cancellation is a noticeable improvement of Apple's previous gen model, now blocking out significantly more background noise. They also boast adaptive transparency, which reacts to sudden increases in exterior sound, as well as adaptive ANC, which adjusts the sound depending on your surroundings and exterior noise levels.

These buds have Conversation Awareness, which means they can detect when you start talking to someone and automatically lower the sound. And it's actually an improvement on Sony's equivalent Speak-to-Chat tech. Spatial audio, meanwhile, is tailored to your specific ear shape.

Playback features and controlled by swiping the stems. Apple has wisely added swipe controls for volume, too — an annoying omission on previous AirPods. On top of all that, you get the great Apple user experience and seamless synchronicity between devices. That said, they're definitely best suited to Apple users. Anyone with an Android phone, for instance, won't feel the full benefit.

Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro earbuds

The Good & The Bad

  • Fun 'blade lights' feature
  • Galaxy AI-assisted sound
  • Adaptive ANC & EQ levels
  • Intuitive on-ear controls
  • Best Galaxy earbuds yet
  • Can get a little loose
  • Not quite as good as AirPods
  • No good for Apple users

Why We Like It

For dedicated Android users, the Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro are Samsung's very best ever earbud offering. These buds have ditched the distinctive bean shape for a more standard stem design, with blade lights on the stems that indicate battery level and connection status and just look cool — it's a bit of a gimmick but it makes them stand out in a very crowded market.

The blade stems are also used for on-ear controls — swipe up and down the stems to adjust the volume and pinch them for playback features. There's added control via the Samsung Wearable app, which is available on Samsung and Android devices only, so these really aren't as good for Apple fans.

If you are an Android user though there's lots to explore and enjoy. There's Galaxy AI-assisted adaptive ANC and adaptive EQ. Their AI-boosted algorithm analyses sound in real-time, automatically switching the ANC to ambient mode when you need it and adjusting the tunes to suit your environment and ear shape. You'll also get 360 spatial audio, only available when connected with a Samsung phone, plus a dual amp and two-way speaker for Samsung's best ever earbud sound.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra earbuds

The Good & The Bad

  • Best-in-class ANC performance
  • Personalised CustomTune sound
  • Multipoint connectivity
  • Nine tip options for perfect fit
  • Battery life is a bit average
  • An expensive option

Bose is a heavy duty name in the audio world and for good reason. Take the Bose QuietComfort Ultra earbuds, which have five-star reviews pretty much across the board and are recognised by audio tech experts as some of the very best earbuds out there — particularly for their industry-leading noise cancellation, which is pretty much the benchmark.

They use CustomTune technology to analyse your ears then adapt and optimise the sound to suit their specific shape. This is Bose, after all — audio quality is a given. And you'll be able to find the perfect fit thanks to a selection of nine tips.

They also offer spatial audio and three different levels of active noise cancellation: Quiet Mode for full noise cancellation, Aware Mode that allows in some of the outside world, and Immersive Mode that combines noise cancellation with Bose Immersive Audio, for fully losing yourself in music.

You will find a better battery life on other earbuds — and the ANC modes can drain the battery further — but that's a trade off for the overall peformance. Bose has also tweaked these buds to now inlcude multipoint point pairing, allowing you to connect to two devices at once.

Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 earbuds

The Good & The Bad

  • Beats sound, Apple tech
  • Hold firm & built for fitness
  • Good heart rate tracking
  • Built for all-day wear
  • Tons of cool features
  • Charging case is big
  • Better ANC available

Why We Like It

The Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 are an upgrade of Beats' first sporty buds, a pioneering design and favourite of athletes for several years. As before, it's about great Apple tech plus Beats' sound — packaged for active lifestyles.

Fitness-friendly features include excellent heart-rate monitoring, a solid battery for long workout sessions, ANC and transparency mode, and an over-ear hook grip that holds them firmly in place. These certainly won't slip out of your ear mid-workout. They also offer support a range of fitness apps.

The only drawback with the heart-rate monitoring (which is does by measuring you pulse through your ears) is there's some clunkiness if you're an Apple Watch owner, as readings are taken from the watch rather than these buds.

They're powered by Apple's powerful H2, which means features and performance-wise they match up to the AirPods. They sound great and offer adaptive EQ plus spatial audio with head tracking. As with other buds, these work best within their native ecosystem — i.e. when paired with Apple devices — but Android users definitely shouldn't rule them out.

Cambridge Audio Melomania M100 earbuds

The Good & The Bad

  • Massive battery life
  • Precision-perfect sound
  • Range of pre-set EQ levels
  • Multipoint device pairing
  • Gaming mode
  • Not much at this price

Why We Like It

Cambridge Audio might not be the first brand you think of when shopping for new earbuds, but it’s well-regarded for tiptop sound quality. And in the case of the Cambridge Audio Melomania M100, at a reasonable price too.

The audio comes via custom-tuned 10mm drivers. The sound is both bold and nuanced, and fully immersive. They have hybrid active noise cancellation that automatically adjusts based on your environment and ear fit.

It's not only about the sound. The Cambridge Audio Melomania M100 also have an excellent battery life — 16 solid hours from a single charge and up to 52 hours with the charging case. That’s the best you’ll find with any earbuds.

There’s a selection of six EQ pre-sets on the Melomania Connect app — perfect for finding a sound that perfectly suits you. There are also a few nice extras, such as support for the aptX Lossless Bluetooth codec, multipoint pairing for connecting to multiple devices, and a low-latency gaming mode.

JBL Reflect Aero earbuds

The Good & The Bad

  • IP68 waterproof
  • Sweat and dust proof
  • Fast charging from case
  • Best in class battery
  • Various ANC modes
  • Too bass-heavy for some
  • Lacking premium features

Why We Like It

JBL are known for excelling with mid-level, no-nonsense headphones. And the JBL Reflect Aero deliver on both performance and price. Designed for outdoors fitness — particularly running — these buds race ahead of the competition and hold as firm in the ear as they hold a sturdy Bluetooth connection.

They have adaptive ANC with Ambient Aware and TalkThru modes, which lower the volume to let in external noise and allow you have a chat mid-run. JBL calls these modes "bionic hearing", both activated by tapping the buds.

It's not the best sound that money can buy. It's never going to be at this mid-level range. But you'd have to be pretty fussy, or some kind of expert-level audiophile to find much fault. JBL does mid-level exceptionally well. Bass fans will be especially impressed with the power in these little buds.

If you are out running, there’s plenty of juice — a full 8 hours plus another 8 hours in the charging case. Also included are three sets of tips to make sure you get the fit just right, plus powerfins for extra in-ear security.

EarFun Air earbuds

The Good & The Bad

  • Award-winning earbuds
  • Great sound & adjustable EQ
  • On-ear control functions
  • Low latency gaming mode
  • Excellent value for money
  • Can't compete with premium buds
  • No high-spec features

Not everything needs to cost hundreds of pounds. Even when you're buying highly rated wireless earbuds. The EarFun Air buds have won awards and earned excellent reviews, despite costing less than £50. They usually cost significantly less, in fact, with heavy discounts on Amazon.

There's little in the way premium features here — they're great but they are the cheap option, after all — but they sound very punchy for the price and have on-ear playback, volume, and call controls. You can adjust functions and EQ levels in the EarFun app, too. They offer crystal-clear call quality.

While the 6-hour battery reflects the price point, the charging case boosts their runtime to a very competitive 35 hours. You also get a low-latency 100ms gaming mode as well as IPX7 "sweat shield" waterproofing. Overall, they're excellent if you don't need all the bells, whistles, and tech.
