The developer of hit indie game Baba Its You is finally about to bring another one of their projects to Steam, while also making it better than ever. Arvi 'Hempuli' Teikari's A Solitaire Mystery is an eccentric twist on the card game you know, and perfect if you've got a Balatro-shaped hole in your heart right now.
If you've never played Baba Is You, there's a very good reason it's on our list of the best puzzle games ever made. As you might expect, you take control of Baba (an unidentified and cute little creature) and use them to push objects around to beat the levels. It's not quite that simple, though, because you can also alter the very rules of the stage by moving words around the level itself. When Hempuli launched the game back in 2019, it quickly took players by storm. It's currently sitting at a 97% user rating on Steam from nearly 19,000 reviews, netting it the highly-coveted 'overwhelmingly positive' score.
One of Hempuli's follow ups, A Solitaire Mystery is a quite different, but equally as inventive, experience. It brings together more than twenty wacky versions of the titular card game, where the rules are bent to a frankly absurd degree. Maybe you'll play poker over the course of the game, perform alchemy, harvest plants, or even defeat eldritch monsters. If you love how Balatro completely twists a deck of standard cards into something entirely new, then A Solitaire Mystery is for you.
A Solitaire Mystery has been available on itch.io since 2024, but now it's coming to Steam very soon. That's not all, either, as this version of the game includes seven new solitaires, more music, polish, and quality-of-life fixes. You can also expect Mac and Linux support, in case you don't use a Windows operating system.
Hempuli is bringing A Solitaire Mystery to Steam on Wednesday July 9. You can wishlist the game right here.
