Even after all the hype, hack-and-slash JRPG Granblue Fantasy: Relink still managed to surprise me when I finally played it. Embracing the world and characters of the beloved Cygames universe, it tells an engaging story filled with grandiose, Monster Hunter-style boss battles, bombastic set pieces that rival the highs of Bayonetta or Metal Gear Rising, and a long-form endgame grind after the main climax if you want to keep playing. As it passes two million copies sold, you can find out what you're missing and try Granblue Fantasy: Relink cheaper than ever, thanks to a new Steam sale.

Boasting a wide range of playable characters, each with their own unique styles and movesets, Granblue Fantasy: Relink is a worthy inclusion on our list of the best JRPGs.When your journey to the legendary land of Estalucia is thrown into disarray, you'll need to forge uneasy alliances with local talents in order to restore order. Its combat allows you to build a party of four, taking control of your chosen lead alongside three companions or striding into battle in co-op with a full squad of real players.

Each character (there are 19 by default, with three more available via paid DLC) feels distinct from the others, offering a core attack set alongside a wide range of skills to construct a build. Mastering them feels much like learning the various Monster Hunter weapons, especially as some of the bigger fights you'll be thrown into are immensely reminiscent of the Capcom series, with you targeting specific body parts and gradually wearing down your foe to unleash your biggest-damage moves.

The main story manages to be a tremendously fulfilling romp packed with suspense, style, and betrayal, even if it's not breaking any dramatically new ground. Everything is presented in such a way that you'll have no trouble following along even if you've never touched a Granblue game before, so don't worry if you don't know your Djeetas from your Narmayas. There are even story logs covering the early events of the original game's narrative, if you'd like to catch up.

I'm reluctant to spoil any of the major set pieces, because the surprise factor is so strong, but I'd recommend the chapter six climax against Maglielle and Excavallion if you're looking to catch a glimpse. Alongside that comes a wide range of side activities, which once again feel reminiscent of Monster Hunter. Heading to the town bounty board, you can pick up dozens of optional quests, which range from delivering certain materials to clearing out hordes of smaller enemies, or even taking on new or harder versions of large-scale fights.

You'll likely see credits roll within 15-20 hours, even if you're going out of your way to tidy up side stuff as you go. But if you're eager to continue into the endgame then you'll find that's where Granblue Fantasy: Relink opens up even more. At this point, the number of missions at your disposal continues expanding, and you're able to keep leveling your roster and upgrading their skills and gear. Reach certain milestones, and you'll unlock extra late-game story fights, giving you more to work towards.

Granblue Fantasy Relink - Four characters take on a giant beast in the JRPG.

It's safe to say that I would recommend Relink, whether you're a JRPG enthusiast or a Monster Hunter aficionado, and right now that's easier than ever. With Cygames president Koichi Watanabe announcing that Granblue Fantasy: Relink has passed the two million sales mark, you can join the fray yourself thanks to a new Steam sale offering its biggest discount we've seen so far on the Valve store.

Granblue Fantasy Relink is 60% off on Steam through Thursday July 10, meaning you'll pay just $23.99 / £19.99 for the standard edition, or $31.99 / £25.99 for the special edition. Find it right here if you've got what it takes to stand against the might of Lilith.
