7 Ways to Maintain Spiritual Resolve in Hard Seasons

I was emotionally spent. “Why?” kept ringing in my mind like an annoying gnat bumping into my face. I had come to the end of myself. I couldn’t strategize a way to fix my situation. This level of vulnerability and uncertainty was frustrating. I experienced disappointment, loss, and emotional rollercoasters that had me dizzier than any ride a theme park could construct. I was stuck in emotional despair. My perspective of His everlasting love and compassion was skewed by my scars, yet I loved God. How could I rise from this depth of spiritual desperation to live in hope again? It’s funny how God speaks in response to our deepest cries. He used a tree to remind me to be resolute in my thinking and trust in Him. When I look at trees, I see stability and strength. I want my life to reflect the same thing, don’t you? Let’s look at someone in the scriptures who experienced disappointment, loss, and emotional upheavals in spite of a deep resolve to follow God’s leading.

David, the beloved king in the lineage of Jesus, wrote Psalm 52 after he had been betrayed by an onlooker in the temple. Because of the witness’s report, David subsequently saw God’s priests killed because of him. He certainly understood how uncertainty felt. During this time, his enemy, King Saul, was seeking to kill him. Psalm 52:8,9 AMPC 

“But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God; I trust in and confidently rely on the loving-kindness and the mercy of God forever and ever. I will thank You and confide in You forever, because You have done it [delivered me and kept me safe]. I will wait on, hope in, and expect in Your name, for it is good, in the presence of Your saints (Your kind and pious ones).”

Spiritual resolve is the ability to remain rooted in God when disappointment, fear, grief, and uncertainty try to shake your faith. This article draws from Psalm 52:8–9 to show seven practical ways believers can stay steady, hopeful, and spiritually grounded in hard seasons.

What Does Spiritual Resolve Mean?

Spiritual resolve means staying rooted in God with steady trust, even when your emotions are shaken, and your circumstances feel uncertain. It does not mean pretending you are unaffected by pain. It means choosing to remain anchored in God’s character, promises, and presence when life feels unstable.

Psalm 52:8,9 AMPC gives a practical approach to maintaining our spiritual resolve, much like a tree. Let’s look at seven ways we can stand just like a tree when the “winds” and “storms” of everyday life or traumatic experiences hit us hard.
