The 15-Minute Friday Reset That Sets Up a Clutter-Free Weekend

Don’t let clutter and little messes get the best of your weekend. A quick, 15-minute reset on Friday can help get your place in gear so you can unwind in peace, without being triggered by little messes everywhere. “Walking into a cluttered kitchen Saturday morning puts you in catch-up mode before the day even starts,” says Ashley Murphy, NEAT Method co-founder, CEO, and author of The NEAT Method Organizing Recipe Book. “A quick reset clears the visual noise so your brain can rest, and that mental clarity is worth far more than the 15 minutes it takes.”

Resetting every room isn’t necessary and could soon turn into a whole-house deep clean if you aren’t careful. Instead, set your target areas ahead of time, and enlist the help of family members to make this quick reset a part of your pre-weekend routine.

1. Tackle Your Entryway or Drop Zone

“This is where the week piles up,” says Murphy. “A clear entryway sets the tone for the rest of the house and makes heading out the door for that weekend soccer game simple. Start your reset by putting away anything that doesn’t belong in this hardworking space: clothes, shoes, paperwork, and junk mail, she advises.

2. Get the Kitchen in Gear

Anything left in your sink or on your countertops should be dealt with and either put away or loaded into the washer. If possible, run the machine so you can start fresh Saturday morning. Do a quick fridge cleanout, tossing anything that’s past its prime or unidentified, then take out the trash right away. If time allows, Murphy suggests making a weekend meal grocery list, so you’re all prepped for a store run Saturday morning.

3. Primp Up the Living Area

“A tidy living room makes the whole house feel calmer,” says the organizing pro. Keep it simple and effective by clearing away any random items that don’t belong, such as dishes, clothes, toys, and more. Fold blankets and fluff pillows so your space is primed for a lazy Saturday morning.

4. Give the Bathrooms Attention

Remember, this isn’t the time for a full bathroom clean. Use this as an opportunity to freshen up the space by wiping down the counter and emptying the trash. Remove any used towels and restock the space with fresh bath and hand towels. If the toilet paper and tissue supply is getting low, restock that as well.

Friday Quick Reset Tips

Murphy shares her quick tips for making the most of your 15-minute Friday reset.

Focus on Clutter—Not Cleaning

“A Friday reset is less about cleaning and more about closing out the week,” says Murphy. Before you start scrubbing floors and vacuuming the sofas, remember this is all about clearing the clutter so you can enjoy the physical and mental benefits of a clear space throughout the weekend.

Keep Moving

Focus on the messiest zones and keep each pass quick. Set a timer if you must to keep yourself moving.

Create a System

A quick reset can become even more efficient when you already have systems in place to help make tidying a breeze. “When everything has a home, resetting means simply returning things to where they belong,” says Murphy. “Without systems, a reset turns into decision fatigue, which is exactly what we’re trying to avoid heading into the weekend.”

Get Everyone Involved

Murphy says a reset can work much better when it becomes a team effort—instead of just a solo job. “Kids can return items to their rooms, partners can handle the kitchen or trash,” she explains. “Five minutes from each person adds up fast.”
