Sublime horror game Still Wakes The Deep is taking us ever-further into the dark, terrifying depths with the launch of new DLC Siren's Rest. Its arrival is a welcome chance to talk about the original, which plays into developer The Chinese Room's strengths in immersive storytelling to deliver a sweary, Scottish tale of an engineer aboard the doomed Beira D oil rig. If you've never played it, you're in luck, as we have ten free Steam keys to give away.

Still Wakes the Deep could easily have passed you by in the chaos of 2024, but it's well worth your time. Nat delivered it a resounding 8/10 in our Still Wakes the Deep review, putting it among our best horror games of the year alongside heavy hitters such as Mouthwashing and the Silent Hill 2 remake. While it's not as outwardly scary as some of its peers, it'll certainly get your pulse pounding, and protagonist Caz's coarse vocabulary lends an ear of authenticity (and at times levity) to the sheer audacity of proceedings.

Without wanting to give too much away, Still Wakes the Deep wastes little time in throwing the Beira D and its crew into eldritch despair. As Caz desperately attempts to save the ship, his crewmates, and himself, you're hurled rapidly through the rig's claustrophobic network of corridors, walkways, and railings, assaulted on all sides by the screech of shifting metal, the roar of water, and the horrifying vertigo every time you're forced out over the roiling waves below. It's a short journey, but a well-paced one that will stick with you far past the closing credits.

Released on Wednesday June 18, Siren's Rest puts us in a new pair of boots, more than a decade after the events of the base game, as saturation diver Mhairi descends to the ocean floor to explore the Beira D's wreckage. Nat delved back in for our Siren's Rest review and praises The Chinese Room's clever perspective shift. It manages to build upon the achievements of the base game in a completely different and more unsettling manner, a concept that Nat remarks could have even been expanded into a full sequel rather than a short-form expansion.

So don't wait around; now's a fantastic time to try Still Wakes the Deep. While there's currently a Steam sale on the go, letting you snag it at half price, we can do one better, as we have ten free Steam keys to give out. These will unlock a copy of the base game, although you'll have to buy Siren's Rest separately if you enjoy the tale enough to see what comes after. All the details to enter the draw can be found below.
