When it comes to general system responsiveness and game load times, the difference between PCIe 40 and PCIe 5.0 drives is much smaller, and the WD Black SN7100 is still significantly faster than many other PCIe 4.0 drives, not to mention older PCIe 3.0 drives such as the Samsung 980 and 2.5-inch SATA drives.

You'll need a motherboard with a 4x PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 5.0 M.2 port to run this drive at its full speed, but most of the best gaming motherboard designs from the last few years will meet this spec - you'll just need to check your motherboard manual. The drive will also work on a PCIe 3.0 M.2 port, although only at half its maximum speed. It's likely to get hot when it's running at full speed, though, so we recommend using one of your motherboard's SSD heatsinks with it.
